Reading Pack #3: Audience: TH RD

This document provides reading materials for a reading pack about audience analysis. It recommends reading a chapter from the book "Pocket guide to technical presentations & professional speaking" to learn about audience analysis methods. Though the book is about technical presentations, its discussion of audience analysis applies well to written documents too if the reader substitutes "listeners" for "readers" and "speech" for "document". Audience analysis is important regardless of the communication medium.

Reading pack #3: Audience

September 28th-October 3rd

Zwickel, S.B. & Pfeiffer, W.S. (2006). Pocket

guide to technical presentations &
professional speaking. Pearson Prentice
Hall.

Although we are using this chapter to consider

audience analysis for written documents, this
text was designed for technical presentations.
This is to your benefit because these authors
go into more depth about audience analysis
methods and take the work more seriously
than many who are communicating through
the written form. Audience anaylsis should be
taken seriously no matter which medium you
are using to communicate.

When you read this chapter, you can mentally

substitute “listeners” for “readers” and “speech”
for “document.” The advice in this chapter
works well for writers if applied correctly.
