Intuitive tarot
The Tarot is one of the most popular tools of divination and has drawn
people into its magic for centuries. In the 14th century the cards were used
as an entertaining parlor game in both France and Italy, rather than a tool
of divination. Sometime in the late 16th and early 17th century divination with
playing cards started to become popular. By the 18th century people were
beginning to assign specific meanings to each card as well as offering
suggestions for how the cards could be laid out for divinatory purposes.

In a movement led by French occultist Jean-Baptist Alliette, or "Etteilla", a

new deck of tarot cards intended solely for supernatural use was
produced in 1789. This deck comprises 78 cards, organized in two
categories: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.

The Major Arcana features 22 cards, each denoting an allegorical figure

(The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The
Hierophant or Pope, The Hermit, The Hanged Man, The Lovers, The Devil, and
The Fool) or the personification of an object (The Wheel of Fortune, The
Chariot, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, and The World) or
an abstract concept (Strength, Justice, Judgement, Temperance, and Death).

These cards are known as the Spiritual law and hold the "big secrets" of
spiritual self-awareness.

The Minor Arcana features four suits of 14 cards each - Swords, Wands
(or Batons), Pentacles (or Coins). Each suit is comprised of ten numbered
cards and four court cards: the King, Queen, Knight, and Page (or Jack).

These cards are known as the "carrying out of the Law" and hold the "small
secrets" of everyday life.

The rise of 20th century occult tarot coincided with the famous Rider-
Waite deck, illustrated by Pamela Coleman Smith, in 1909. This deck has been
in continual print ever since. Today there are hundreds of different types
of Tarot card decks and games. Most of these are used for divination of
some sort.

Choose a deck that feels right for you. Intuitive Tarot is

all about trusting your impressions as you handle the cards.
The beauty in reading Tarot is to be spontaneous, trust your
intuition and feel what the cards are telling you.
Guidelines
Some simple guidelines for Intuitive Tarot:
When purchasing the cards, always look for ones that have plenty of
pictures. They must tell a story, or you must be able to tell a story with
them.
Understanding the astrological signs helps a great deal. Being aware of
the planets and their vibrations or influence allows for deeper insight.
Numbers are also important. All things have a vibration that can be
determined by a number.
Being creative and relaxed.
Having a genuine enjoyment of communicating with others.
Using more than one form of divination with the reading also helps. Such
as stones, Runes, crystal balls, or other cards to choose from during
the reading. This makes for a deeper form of spiritual counseling.
Always be truthful. One good piece of advice is to always ask your
spirit guides to help you speak in a loving and kind way. Love, whether
tough or soft, when given from the heart, will always carry a healing
quality, even if the person is not ready for it. When they are ready, the
truth will be theirs.
Professionalism and good ethics are important!
Close down and cleanse before you go on to the next reading. You can
use a mental method such as visualization or prayer or you can use a
physical cleansing such as smudging with sage.

The art of reading the Tarot:

Simply describe the card. Be liberal with adjectives and descriptive
phrases. What is going on? How do the figures seem to feel in the
situation you've described? What is the atmosphere?
Repeat what you've just said but in the declarative form: "I am (looking,
etc)..." Try to use active verbs and exact phrases from the previous
step.
Turn the statements into open-ended questions and answer them. For
example: "How are you being Devilish?"
Examine the images as symbols of events, beliefs and choices in your
life. In what ways are they beneficial or limiting?
How can you triumph? Determine what qualities the card has that you
value or that you would like to develop.
Working with your cards
When you have selected a deck that speaks to you, it is time to get to
know the card. With a brand new deck you may wish to smudge it first and
then spend a few nights sleeping with the deck under your pillow so the
cards can pick up your personal energy. You can also keep it on your
nightstand with your favorite quartz crystal. Once you are familiar with
your deck it can also be kept at an altar between readings. The key is to
do what makes you feel comfortable.

It is a good idea to protect your cards from both physical damage and
negative energy. Choose a method that feels natural for you (or even a
combination of methods) such as:
Ritual consecration of your deck
Wrapping the cards in a silk scarf
Keeping your cards in a small box
Putting your cards in a drawstring cloth bag
Charging your deck under the light of the full moon

Get to know your tarot deck intimately before preparing to do a reading

for someone else. It is important to brush up on the basics. If your deck
came with an insert of card meanings, be sure to read through it and learn
them. Study the Major Arcana as well as the four suits of the minor arcana
so you have a deep understanding of what each card represents. Your
intuitive impressions may be different from the "book taught"
representations and that is perfectly fine. In fact, it is preferred.

Decide if you will be comfortable using 'reversals' in your divination. You may
choose to read a card the same way regardless of its orientation. Or you
may want to follow the reversed meaning that is applied to each card.
Whatever you decide, be sure you are consistent and stick to it with every
reading.

Practice a variety of layouts - there is the Celtic Cross, the Romany

method, a Pentagram spread - or even ones of your own making. Remember
as you turn the cards over to be read, flip them from one side to the
other, rather than vertically. Place all the cards in the layout in front of
you at once, before you begin reading any of them.

BASIC 3 - CARD LAYOUT

A simple layout to do a basic reading in three steps.

The cards represent the past, the present, and the future.

7-CARD HORSESHOE SPREAD

This is a popular spread that connects each

card to a different aspect of the problem or
situation at hand. In this version, the cards
represent, in order from left to right:
the past, the present, hidden influences, the
Querent, attitudes of others, what should the
querent do about the situation, and the likely
outcome.

THE PENTAGRAM SPREAD

Using the magical symbol of the five-pointed star, we
incorporate each aspect of the four elements, as
well as Spirit, into the layout.

Center - Pick a card to represent the Querent

Upper Right - Earth: Identifies what will keep you
grounded in positive and negative ways
Lower Right - Air: Will see what influences are
around you
Lower Left - Fire: Analyzes the creation and
destruction in your life
Upper Left - Water: Explores the wisdom and
intuition of the situation
Top Center - Spirit: Delves into the whole self
and what the final result of all the other factors
will be.

used to answer a specific question. It is
considered the "professional" layout. You can 3

Minor Arcana
The Minor Arcana represent the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of the
Universe. These cards point out our events, challenges, and lessons to be learned. Day-to-day
issues are temporary and can be changed based on your actions. Pay special attention to
repeating suits or numbers in a reading.

Each suit has a ruling element and correspond to a specific area of life:
WANDS are fire and action, dealing with projects and battles, creativity and destruction..
CUPS are water and emotion, intuition, love, relationships, loss, spirituality - matters of the
heart
SWORDS are air and our intellectual world - including fear & self-doubt - our principles,
justice, a sense of right and wrong.
PENTACLES are earth and our physical world of sensuality, work, craft, our bodies,
food, resources, home, environment, structures and foundations.

Court Cards represent a person - either yourself or someone else. They reflect personality
traits and characteristics, and can give insight into motives.
