these some of the amazing things that can come your way through the study and the
practice of the tarot
Hi! I’m Robert Rubin and I'm the founder of Mysterium Philippines
(www.MysteriumPhilippines.org) and Tarot reader of over 20 years
(www.RobRubinReadings.com), It was through the Tarot that many wonderful
blessings were given to me. Some of these things were life changing such as meeting my
wife and leaving a job that I hated to pursue something that I’ve been passionate about
since I was 14 (which was as you guessed the Tarot!)
And it is because of all the blessings that the Tarot has given me that I was inspired to
write this book so that I can share with you the many beautiful things that the Tarot has to
offer. And in effect hopefully inspire you to take your
Tarot education to the next level and further your
studies after reading this simple text.
Through the creation of my 6 week long Tarot course
(Entitled An Intro to the Tarot) that the lives of many
others like you have been changed for the better .
Many like you have started knowing nothing about the
Tarot only for them to grow into fully fledged and
forged Mysterium Tarot readers who not only love
what they’re doing with the Tarot but who also are
earning well from it! And here’s to to hoping you join
us after your adventures in this text!
Bright Blessings!
Rob

About Rob and Mysterium Philippines .............17
Welcome to the Tarot
WELCOME to the world of the TAROT! I quite honestly would have
wish I heard those words when I first stumbled upon the cards for
the first time. But since I didn't have that luxury when I first met
the card, i’m going to do so just for you. Because whether you
admit it or not, the fact that you’re reading this book shows to us
that in one way or another the Tarot resonates with you, be it
through the mystique that the cards emit when you look at them, or
due to the powerful symbolism that they possess, or perhaps have
stumbled upon these wonderful cards due to a positive tarot
experience (PTE for short) and in response you have wanted to
further understand how this amazing deck of cards works.
In 21 years of reading the Tarot and 10 years of teaching It i have
observed through my own experiences and through the successes of
Mysterium Philippines (www.Mysteriumphilippines.org) that the
best way to teach the tarot is to let the learner grow in a non-
pressured environment, where they can learn, practice and
understand the cards at their own pace. And it is for the benefit of
you learners that I have not met, I’ve created this little E-book to
guide you on your way to becoming successful in your tarot
adventure.
Whichever way you place it the mere fact that you’re reading this
book shows to us that the Tarot is already in you’re energy field and
because of that I’m going to do what I can to make your entrance to
the world of the Tarot much easier and more enjoyable!
Your first step: Choosing your
Deck
Now what is the study and practice
of the Tarot without a deck?! Since
we are in fact going to be using the
cards I’m going to offer some basic
suggestions as to how to select your
first deck and how to maximize it
for your own proficiency.
Now many of us will be in fact
called to select a deck the represents
our own artistic expressions and
that we personally resonate with.
And this for all intents and purposes is fine. However if you are a
bare bones beginner in the tarot and you never have read the tarot
before and are willing to take the advice of someone who has
dedicated his life to the practice then these are my suggestions.
1) Start with a deck that Has the words TAROT associated with it.
What do I mean by this? When you think of the Tarot What deck comes to
mind?? A good deck to choose from will always be the Rider Waite
Smith deck since its what comes to mind when most people think of Tarot
cards. Other decks like the Marseilles and Thoth tarot are good but in my
own opinion these are best used for advanced readers after they have had a
good level of exposure with the cards. After all you don't want people
mistaking your Tarot practice for some fantasy card game.
2) Secondly You have to LIKE the deck you select! No matter how
potent, ancient or popular the deck is. If you don't like how it looks or how
it feels to you you are not going to use it. It does not get anymore simple
than this. There are dozens of what we Tarot scholars call BEGINNER
decks that you can choose from but if you’re going to force yourself to use a
deck that you find sucks you will end up frustrated at the very beginning of
your tarot journey. If the basic Rider Waite Smith (RWS) is too bland for
you then there are lovely variants of like the the Radiant RWS or even the
Universal Tarot which you can choose from to begin your Tarot journey.
3) Know how to differentiate between Descriptive Decks and Intuitive
Decks.. This is one mistake many self taught tarot readers i’ve met have
been stuck with since the beginning of their days reading the cards. A
Descriptive deck will be a good start since the meaning of the cards can be
derived from the illustrations themselves. So in effect this will help you
learn the meanings and internalize them. Intuitive Decks however simply
either rely on you memorizing the meaning of each card (which will take
forever) or will force you to use your intuitive facilities to derive the
meaning of the card. a Good example can be shown below. where I share a
perfect example of a descriptive deck vs an Intuitive deck.
As you can see with these two cards we have two very
different versions of the 2 of wands, where on the left
the sample used is from the Rider Waite Smith deck
and shows within it a very descriptive illustration of
the meaning of the card. With proper study and
deduction you can derive the meaning of the card.
While to the right we have a good example of an
intuitive deck since the meaning of the cards in itself
can not be seen through the illustration itself and would
require either intuition or memorization
Now I'm sure that you are wondering, why doesn't this book have
any Tarot cards definitions within it? Where are the Cards
meanings, and reversals? My answer? There are dozens of books
that have done that already and chances are the deck you bought
came with its little booklet with each of the card meanings. SO
instead of force-feeding you information that can be looked up
effortlessly on google I decided instead to give you something more
of substance to make your Tarot journey more enjoyable
Your 2nd Step: Get to know the cards!
Some of you may be so
excited that the moment
you get your new cards you
want to run out and read
for everyone you come
across. and I salute your
enthusiasm. But as my
dear “Maestra” Naomi said
to me dozens of times
“Make haste slowly” So before setting up shop at your local
carnival one of the best pieces of advice I can offer you as you begin
your your journey as a Tarot reader. Because the best thing you can
do for yourself as a Tarot reader is to develop a relationship
with the Tarot rather than memorizing hundreds of spreads and
Tarot meanings without have any personalized connection to them.
As a very helpful means of getting to know the cards, a very
powerful yet simple tool will always be what we call The Tarot
Learning Journal
But in most cases, experienced readers use the Tarot journal a
form of self reflection and self discovery, we will instead tweak the
Tarot journal to help us develop a deeper relationship with the
Tarot cards by creating our own story of the Tarot.
Creating your Tarot Learning Journal
The Tarot Learning
Journal (TLJ) is a neat too
that new comers can
create in order to help
organize their thoughts,
ideas, and reflections on
the tarot to help them
develop a more reflective
approach towards the tarot
cards themselves. Some of
the most seasoned and
experienced readers still
use Tarot journal up to this
day, but for you beginners its best to select any journal you would
feel comfortable writing in to express what ever thoughts, feelings
and ideas enter your mind as you use the tarot.
Once we have selected our Tarot journal we can now start to
organize exactly what we are seeing within the deck, since if we try
to work with ALL card at one time we will likely be victims of
information overload and this can work against our understanding.
So to make things easier. Start by segmenting the deck into 5
groups
1) The Cups, 2) The Coins, 3) The Swords and 4) The Wands (56 in
total) represent what we call the Minor Arcana of the Deck, while
the Remaining Cards (22 in total) represent the 5) Major Arcana.
For reasons of simplicity we can agree that the each group has the
following representation.
The Cups : For Emotions, and Feelings (Water)
The Coins: For Profit and Material Concerns (Earth)
The Wands: For Things that you are driven by (Fire)
The Swords: For the Problems that you face (Air)
Major Arcana: Represent the Major scenarios, players and
circumstances in a Persons life
Now for the duration of 1 week, Dedicated yourself to the use of 1
and only 1 category of the 5. Ideally 1 of the 4 elements. Throughout
this week, spend time doing what ever you can within your Tarot
Learning Journal to help you broaden your understanding of each
card within the suit.
Some of the most effective methods that have been done include
but are not limited to
1) Writing a Story of all the cards in the suit
2) Using 1 card or more to ask yourself “How does this card make me FEEL
3) Creating fiction based upon the characters of each suit (What does the
queen of swords really want after all?)
4) Meditating on each card for a few mins and recording your insights
afterwards
5) Writing a song that encapsulated the suit/card you are holding
or what ever YOU feel is most effective in your journey to deeper your
understanding of the suit.
I once had a student who would look at 1 card within the suit and
then draw immediately what came to mind right there at then. And
used this wonderful illustration as a means of telling the story of
what he thought the card mean.
At the end of all this its not what the authorities of the tarot think
that matters, but instead how you feel and interpret the card that
matters more. The Tarot can and will be used
Now most of you reading this would like to dive right into the Major
Arcana but I always found that it strangely enough more effective to
use the Major arcana LAST of the 5 Categories since it can be
thought of as a reward or a rite of passage after finishing the 4
elemental suits
After the 4 week period you of working with each Elemental Suit
(Earth, Air, Fire and Water) you can dedicate a period of 22 days to
the contemplation and study of EACH of the Major Arcana Cards
Some of the Helpful methods i’ve used in my Tarot learning journal
are as Follows
1) How can I have an (Emperor) kind of Day?
2) What Lesson is (the Sun) Trying to teach me at the end of this day
3) What memories and feelings are released when I see (the Tower)?
4) What kind of food would I serve to (the fool)
5) If (Justice) was my best friend what would we talk about?
Again you can see how eclectic this can be. and all you can
approach this any way you would potentially like. What matters
most is that you take the time to WRITE down your reflections,
observations and revelations as they come so that you have a record
of how far you’ve come as a tarot student.
As a last tip one of the best ways I have learned to work on any
holes in my Tarot game is to look at the cards that I don't
understand for the life of me. These are the areas that you need the
most work with. If you see a card and you cant make heads or tails
of it this is GOOD! This means you already are aware of what you
don't know and you can address this by doing more work in your
Tarot Learning Journal with this card until you feel comfortable
with it. At the end of the day what you put into it is what you’ll get
out of it.
By referring to your Tarot Learning journal regularly you will be
less pressured to memorizer the meanings of each card and instead
feel more open to freely interpret the cards of each suit based upon
your own subjective understanding and in no time you will apply
these personalized meanings to your tarot readings on an every day
basis. At the end of the day its your own story that counts not mine!
Step Number 3: Find 1 Spread and STICK TO IT.
There are are near
LIMITLESS number of
spreads available on the
internet and in a lifetime of
books on the subject. And you
may tempted to jump straight
into the Celtic Cross (I
recommend against it
actually) instead find a spread
which uses 3 to 5 cards and stick to it. It can either be one created
by someone else, or one you make for yourself. at the end of the day
you need to work with what you feel most comfortable with. Its no
use having 1000 spreads if you never use them. Remember the
words of Bruce lee
“I fear not the man who knows 10,000 kicks, but the man who
practiced 1 kick 10,000 times”
but simply translate this to a Tarot spread (don’t Kick people
please!)
Step Number 4: READ THE TAROT
After enough time of getting to know the cards, you’ll have the
confidence to actually give someone their first reading. It may be
done casually or someone may actually pay you to do so. Whichever
you choose it will be an effective learning experience for since
nothing beats actually trying to read the cards when you’re aiming
to get good at it. But most importantly go easy on yourself you are
BOUND to make mistakes. But this doesn't mean you suck as a
reader. It just means you now have a clearer Idea on to what you
need to work on.
Conclusion
I hope you had fun! Because like i say to everyone else when you are having fun you are
truly learning. But we literally can’t cram a lifetime of tarot experiences into just 1 small
book, so I hope this text inspired you to take your learning to the next level. For those of
you who would want to learn more not only do we recommend you join the Tarosophy
Tarot Association but we also invite you to enroll to the 6 week long Intro to the
Tarot Certification Program at Mysterium Philippines to learn directly from me
how to develop an lucrative career as a Professional Tarot consultant. Not only is this
wonderful course open from our learning center in Quezon City Metro Manila but we also
have a Live on-line learning option for students who wish to learn the Tarot from all
around the world
At the end of the day learning the tarot and further educating yourself in this wonderful
practice will not only boost your income but will open many doors in terms of friendship,
self confidence, expression and social skills. After all who doesn't love having their Tarot
cards read? And as your days turn to months and your months turn to years with these
wonderful cards you will begin to realize that your own tarot voice will be heard within
you and as you give more attention to this amazing voice you will notice that not only will
it be more accurate but that you will in effect find it as a helpful tool and ally in your
journey to learn the tarot and become a respect tarot reader.
