How to Build an Amazing
Author Blog
Issue #1 of 10
Why You Should Start a Blog As an
Author
Hello and welcome to this course on how to grow your authority and make book
sales through blogging — or How to Build an Amazing Author Blog, for
short! By the end of our 10 lessons, you’ll understand how to:
Create a blog full of engaging content
Grow traffic to this blog
Turn that traffic into a community
Convert that community into book sales
That’s right — all those things (and more) become possible once you have a
blog! So first things first: in this lesson, we’ll dig into what a blog is, and what
makes it so powerful.
What is a blog?
A blog is a website that you regularly update with new content like stories,
how-to guides, reviews, interviews, and videos. The purpose of this content is
both to maintain your current audience and to attract new people to your
website.
What’s important to realize here, though, is that your blog should also include
your offer(s) — the materials and upgrades people can get from you, either for
free or for sale. I’ll be showing you how to do this effectively in a future lesson.
For now, just realize your blog is more than just a place to tell stories. Indeed,
think of your blog as your book business hub: your online brick-and-mortar.
Your goal is to create an incredible slice of real estate on the web, attract people
to come check it out, and convert as many of those people as possible into
raving fans and customers.
Here’s how that process might look:
1. You write a book about how you quit your job to travel the world, which you
want to sell on your blog.
2. To attract people to your offer and help them to learn more about you while
also getting a taste of your writing style, you write blog posts optimized to rank
in Google searches (again, more on this later), share engaging content on
social media, and become active wherever your audience is, like niche Facebook
groups.
3. As these people visit your blog, you should also be asking them to join your
email list. The truth is, it’s tough to make a sale to a new reader. So you offer
something for free — an excerpt of the book, or possibly a checklist of things
you need to do before quitting your job to travel the world — to entice people to
subscribe.
4. Once they’re on your list, you can nurture the subscriber through
valuable content sent regularly to their inbox, until there is enough trust in the
relationship for you to ask them to purchase.
We’ll be breaking this down in more detail throughout the course, but what I
want you to see right now is the big picture. Basically, your blog isn’t the be-all-
end-all of your work, but a useful tool for reaching more people.
Also, if you haven’t written your book yet, your blog can be a great place
to experiment. You can use your blog posts to get comfortable with your
voice, play around with different topics, and discover what really resonates with
an audience. Then, once you’re ready to put pen to paper for the finished
product, you’ll feel more confident and will be able to market to a community
that’s already in place!
Tomorrow I’ll be back in your inbox to talk about creating an enticing blog
brand. In the meantime, feel free to head over to my Get Started page, where I
offer a number of freebies for beginning bloggers.
Happy blogging!
