WRITING CHECKLIST

Content - Does the first sentence tell why the topic is important
and capture the reader's interest?
- Are the ideas connected effectively?
- Can you give examples to explain better what you say?

Paragraphs / - Are the ideas well organized into paragraphs? (e.g.


text structure Introduction, Arguments, Conclusion)

Spelling - Did you use the spell checker in Word?


- Are there any particular spelling mistakes you always
make?

Linking words / - Did you use enough linking words / connectors to


connectors convey ideas more clearly?
- Did you use connectors appropriately?
- Did you use the right prepositions with the connectors
(e.g. On the one hand)?
- Did you use the right punctuation after the connector
(e.g. However, )

Use of - Did you have to look up any words in the dictionary?


vocabulary Are they used correctly?
- Suggestions:
- Use Google to see how other people use this
word.
- If you found this word in a Spanish/English
dictionary, look it up in an English definitions
dictionary. Is it the right word? Should it be
followed by a certain preposition?
- Did you use specific vocabulary related to the topic?

Use of - Check in Google if a certain combination of word+


prepositions preposition is right.
- Check again the use of “of” and “in”. Students often
overuse these prepositions.

Verb tense - Did you use the right verb tenses.


- Are you consistent in the use of verb tense throughout
the essay?

Subject - Do all your verbs have a subject?


- Do any of the verbs have a “double subject”? (e.g. “this
it is good” should be either “this is good” or “it is good”)

Literal - Did you translate any of the sentences from


translation Spanish/Catalan? Does it sound too Spanish/Catalan?
Can you express the same idea in a different way?

Other? - What mistakes do you often make in your writing? Make


a list of your typical errors and check future work for
these.
