BIOLOGY
                       WHY DO WE FALL ILL?
                           ASSIGNMENT 5
                      GIST OF THE LESSON:
1. Prevention of a disease is more desirable than its successful
treatment.
2. Infectious diseases can be prevented by public health hygiene
measures that reduce exposure to infectious agents.
3. Infectious diseases can also be prevented by using immunisation.
4. Our immune system has cells that specialize in killing infecting
microbes.
5. Lack of success of the immune system leads to the development
of severe infectious diseases.
6. The functioning of immune system will depend on availability of
proper and sufficient nourishment and food.
7. Antigens are substances that activate an immune response.
8. Antigens trigger the production of specific antibodies by the
immune system cells.
9. Antibodies react with the specific antigens to render them
harmless.
10. Acquired immunity in humans is of two types: active and passive.
11. Vaccination is the injection of a killed microbe in order to
stimulate the immune system against the microbe, thereby
preventing the disease.
12. Edward Jenner discovered the first vaccine. (Latin for ’cow’ is
‘vacca’ and cowpox is ‘vaccinia’)
13. Small pox was eradicated worldwide by a collaborative global
vaccination program led by WHO.
14. Nowadays, vaccines are available against diptheria, whooping
cough, tetanus, measles, polio, tuberculosis, hepatitis and other
infectious diseases.
15. Majority of children in rural India get naturally immune to
hepatitis A by five years of age as they are exposed to the virus
through water.
                              ASSIGNMENT

      ii) small intestine
      iii) large intestine
      iv) bile duct
    B) You are aware of the Polio Eradication Programme .Children are
vaccinated because:
     i) vaccination kills polio causing microorganism.
ii) prevents entry of polio causing pathogen.
iv) it creates immunity in the body.
     v) all of the above.
Q2.Name:
   A) The bacteria causing acne.
   B) The system in our body which is activated in response to an infection.
Q3. “Prevention of a disease is more desirable than its treatment”. Justify the
          statement.
Q4. Discuss in brief the principle of immunisation.
Q5. What may be the symptoms of a disease if the following organs are
          infected:
               A) Lungs
               B) Brain
Q6.It has been observed that despite the availability of the vaccine for
hepatitis A in the market, it may not be necessary to be given to children by
the time they are five years of age. Why?
