Class IX
Subject BIOLOGY
Assignment 9
Gist of the lesson –
In a temporary mount of onion peel and human cheek cells
which were shown and discussed before we see a light
staining region which is the cytoplasm and a dark staining
region is the nucleus. Protoplasm is the colourless fluid
content of the cell bounded by the cell membrane .It is the
physical basis of life. Protoplasm includes the cytoplasm and
the nucleus. Cytoplasm is the part of protoplasm lying
outside the nucleus between the cell membrane and the
nuclear membrane.
Cytoplasm contains suspended organelles. An organelle is a
protoplasmic body having a specific function. Eg.
Mitochondria, golgi body, plastids. We must remember that
organelles are present only in eukaryotes and not in
prokaryotes. In this context we recapitulate the differences
between prokaryotes and eukaryotes which was done in the
last class. Membrane of a cell separates its contents from
external environment. Cells need a lot of chemical activities
to support their structure and function. Different activities
are performed separately within different types of
membrane bound structures called organelles. So it is
important for cells to have organelles .In class 9 we will study
the following organelles Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi
Apparatus ,Lysosomes, Mitochondria, Plastids, Vacuoles.
Endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranous
tubules within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell,
continuous with the nuclear membrane. There are
two types of endoplasmic reticulum: rough endoplasmic
reticulum (RER) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER).
Both types are present in plant and animal cells. :
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum have ribosomes attached to
their surface and their main function is to produce proteins in
the cells. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum have no ribosomes
attached to their surface and their main function is to produce
lipids and also detoxify toxins in the body.
The Golgi apparatus, also known as the Golgi complex is an
organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. It is a complex of
vesicles and folded membranes within the cytoplasm. It is a part
of the endomembrane system in the cytoplasm, It packages
proteins into membrane-bound vesicles inside the cell before
the vesicles are sent to their destination.
Golgi apparatus was discovered by Camillo Golgi, a Nobel
lauriet.
ASSIGNMENT 9
1. Name the chemical used in “black reaction”
method of Camillo Golgi.
2. ER plays an important role in detoxification.
Justify.
3. Read the following statements and answer the
question given below:-
a) They are smaller in size.
b) They have nucleoid.
c) They do not have Golgi complex, lysosomes,
mitochondria.
Which group of organisms does ‘they’ refer to in
the above statements
4. Fill in the blanks and retype the following
sentences:
i) The lysosomes are formed from the __________.
ii) The parallel stacks of membrane bound vesicles of
the Golgi complex constitute the __________.
iii) Viruses do not show characteristics of life outside a
living body because they lack ___________.
iv) In a temporary mount of onion peel, the region of
the cell taking light stain is called __________ whereas
that taking dark stain is called ____________.
4. What is membrane biogenesis?
