Reaction Paper about the Movie “Breakthrough”

I figured Breakthrough was just another Christian romantic flick, and almost didn't
watch it. But this film is a positive depiction of many issues that pastors will consider. In
times of trials and challenges in life, do not question the competence of our God, he
knows what he’s doing, he has the plans for our life, that is why there are people around
us that are sent and made an instrument by God to help and conquer those trials. Just
build your trust in him and he won't disappoint you
Jason Noble, is a traditional, new, young pastor. He's in love with modern music
and "whatever it takes to communicate with young people." Noble sees his calling as
being personal rather than related to caring for people. But can he connect and care for
a middle-aged member of the Church who doesn't like him?
Joyce Smith, bringing grudges against God. When she was teenager, she gave
up a child and never forgive herself or God. She adopted a boy and get drowned in the
lake. Noble’s job is to connect to with her and family.
Joyce was told by the doctor that her son would die but she refused to believe it.
Noble wanted to be there for Joyce in the midst of this crisis although she said, "No."
Noble was able to build confidence with her by being there.
Joyce had been raising John with her husband Brian, whom the couple adopted
during a mission trip to Guatemala. At the age of 14, John is much more interested in
music and friends than his mother, who wants her son to act and talk as though he were
not a teenager. The film attempts to create a minor character arc for Joyce. At first, she
is judging things she doesn't like, like John Noble, the new pastor at her church, as well
as his hair and choices for church service music (Someone raps during a praise song!).
Finally, she need not be judgmental and overbearing, because the universe has proven
her right. Nonetheless, John and a few friends on a local lake fall through the ice. Until
firefighter Tommy Shine, he is underwater for about 15 minutes, thinking he hears a
voice telling him exactly where to look, dragging the boy out of the water. You get one
guess about where Tommy, a proclaimed atheist, is last seen in the film. Doctors say
John is dead, but when Joyce screams a prayer next to the body of her son, the heart of
the boy begins to beat. Still unconscious, he has been rushed to a hospital with a
drowning specialist, who is not positive about John's chances. Joyce advises the doctor
to "let God do the rest" and do the best he can.
Lying there in a medically induced coma, John is still fighting for his life, and the
doctors have told Joyce that he will be seriously neurologically disabled, even if he
recovers. So, Joyce is hoping not only for the life of John but for the return of who he
was: a vibrant, mouthful jock who was the starting guard on his Christian middle-school
basketball team and was just reaching the field of alienated individuality known as
adolescence. Dr. Garrett, the esteemed physician who heads up the case of John,
warns Joyce to scale down her hopes at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, a world-
class medical facility located in St. Louis. John, he says, has gone too far to recuperate

a lot. Yet Joyce believes in a power higher than medicine, so she refuses to
countenance the words of the good doctor — or accept any negative talk about John's
prognosis, particularly if the conversation takes place before him.
This another faith-based true story movie is very inspirational and really touches
my heart as it tells that have faith in God and he will do the rest. The portrayal of the
casts in the movie are awesome, as they played the role well. The flow of the movie and
the emotions of each of the characters gives the movie more compelling to watch, as
well as the lines and the cinematography of the movie. This movie truly exemplifies
what it means to have faith.
Life is too short as many would say, enjoy the rest of your life but do not sacrifice
for any short-term happiness. Listen, it is when John and his friends playing on top of
the ice in the lake, when a man told them to get out of the lake, they refused to listen
and the resulted them in getting drowned.
God remains faithful to his promises; indeed, he is awesome. He doesn’t let you
suffer that much from any circumstances in life, you can feel his presence by the love of
people around you. Pastor Noble who is always on the side of Joyce when she’s so
devastated about what happened to his son, and the friends and classmates of John
never stop praying for his recovery and makes feel their presence show to the Smith
Family.
The movie made me realized that no matter what you are experiencing in life, be
grateful, because there are people whom you can lean on in times of trials. This movie
depicts the strong bond of family’s faith to our God. Breakthrough is an enthralling
reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a
miracle.
