Program /Course: MASONRY NC I
Unit of Competency: PERFORMING BASIC MASONRY WORKS
Module: Perform Basic Masonry Works
Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
Welcome to Masonry Grade 9 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on how
Perform Basic Masonry Works.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to
orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need to keep track of the
learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore,
you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in
the module.

WHAT IS IT
Parts of Portable Scaffolding
Outriggers are usually 2x2’s used to hold platforms. Uprights or Posts are used
to support the structure.
Platforms are raised floors used to step on by worker while working.
Diagonal Braces are 2x2’s used to prevent lateral movements.
Cleats are 2x2’s used to support outriggers
Scaffolding is a temporary structure used to support people and material in the
construction or repair of buildings and other large structures. It is usually a modular
system of metal pipes or tubes, although it can be made from other materials.

Safety Hints Regarding Construction of Wooden Scaffolding
1. Use strong lumber for the scaffolding. Never use decayed lumber or lumber with
knots, wind shakes and splinters because they easily break.
2. Properly brace the uprights of the scaffolding to prevent lateral movement.
3. Nail all the platforms to their supports. If the platforms are not nailed, they might
slip or tip off.
4. Place enough support for the platform.
5. Avoid long protruding platforms beyond the supports. If they can’t be avoided, place
another support at the end. Unsupported overhanging platforms may break or tip off
when stepped upon.
6. Properly secure the supports of the bracket and cantilever scaffolds.
7. Always wear PPE.
Hints in the Construction of Scaffolds
The construction and location of the different parts of scaffolding should be well
planned so that they will not bother the placing of some members of the
building. A haphazard placing of the different parts of scaffolding will make it
necessary to dismantle and reconstruct the scaffold. This is a waste of time.
The platform should be at a convenient height so that the workers on the
platform do not have to stoop or stand on their toes while doing the job.
The platforms should be at level, unless the particular job requires a sloping
platform.
Steps in Assembling Tubular Scaffolding
1. Place the sole plate firmly on the ground.
10
MASONRY K to 12
Technology and Livelihood Education SAN JOSE AGRICULTURAL HIGH
SCHOOL
2. Position the base plate then check the distance from the building.
3. Position the ledgers.
4. Level the bay using spirit level, adjust base plate if necessary.
5. Safely and accurately position the platform at the desired height.

LESSON 3: PERFORM FABRICATION, INSTALLATION AND
STRIPPING OF FORMWORKS
(WEEK 5-6)
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
Identify fabrication and installation of formworks materials
Familiarize the components of formworks
WHAT IS IT
FORMS
Concrete mixture is generally semi-fluid material that produces the shape of anything
to which it is poured. Thus, construction form is used to produce the desired size,
shape and form of concrete.
Characteristics of forms for concrete:
1. It must be watertight
2. Simple and economically designed to be removed and reassembled without damage
to themselves nor to concrete
3. Strong and rigid enough to sustain the weight and horizontal pressure of fresh
concrete
Selection of forms depends upon the following considerations:
1. The cost of material
2. The construction and assembling cost
14
MASONRY K to 12
Technology and Livelihood Education SAN JOSE AGRICULTURAL HIGH
SCHOOL
3. The number of times it could be used
4. The strength and resistance to pressure and tear and wear
The two types of framing adopted for plywood forms are:
1. The longitudinal rib type
2. The perpendicular rib type
The longitudinal rib type is generally economical. The length of ribs are preserved
which could be utilized later.
The most common material being used in forms and its components are
timber/lumber and plywood due to their availability and workability.
Lumber is wood material that has been manufactured into boards. Lumber is
predominantly used for structural purposes: frame, spacer, braces, and studs in forms
Plywood is a manufactured wood panel made from thin sheets of wood veneer.
Plywood layers (called veneers or plys) are glued together, with adjacent plies having
15
MASONRY K to 12
Technology and Livelihood Education SAN JOSE AGRICULTURAL HIGH
SCHOOL
their wood grain rotated relative to adjacent layers up to 90 degrees commonly used
for sheathing in form.
COMPONENTS OF FORMWORKS
1. Stud is a
vertical member in the light frame construction techniques called balloon framing and
platform framing of a building's wall.
2. Spreader/spacer is used to separate one assembly to another assembly.
16
MASONRY K to 12
Technology and Livelihood Education SAN JOSE AGRICULTURAL HIGH
SCHOOL
3. Braces are used to hold other components in place.
4. Sheathing is a layer of boards or of other wood or fiber materials applied to the
outer studs, joists, and rafters of a building to strengthen the structure and serve as a
base for an exterior weatherproof cladding.
5. Peg is a small cylindrical or tapered pin, as of wood, used to fasten things or plug a
hole.
WHAT’S MORE
Direction: Read the statements carefully and fill in the blank with the missing
word.
1. _______________________ is a layer of boards or of other wood or fiber materials
applied to the outer studs, joists, and rafters of a building 77 to strengthen the
structure and serve as a base for an exterior weatherproof cladding.
2. _________________________ is a manufactured wood panel made from thin sheets of
wood veneer.
3. _______________________ is generally semi-fluid material that produces the shape of
anything to which it is poured. Thus, construction form is used to produce the desired
size, shape and form.
4. ________________________ is used to separate one assembly to another assembly.
5. ______________________ is used to hold other components in place.
ASSESSMENT
ACTIVITY I. Direction: Read the statements carefully and select the best answer from
the given choices. Write the letter of your answer on a separate sheet.
1. Construction form is used to ____________________.
a. produce the desired shape of concrete
b. produce the desired size of concrete 73
c. produce the desired appearance or form of concrete
d. All of the above
2. One of this is NOT a characteristic of forms for concrete
a. Watertight c. Simple and economically designed
b. Airtight d. Strong and rigid to sustain weight
3. An economical type of framing for concrete forms
a. Longitudinal rib type c. Solid rib type
17
MASONRY K to 12
Technology and Livelihood Education SAN JOSE AGRICULTURAL HIGH
SCHOOL
b. Perpendicular rib type d. Staggered rib type
4. The load that will carry the forms for column comes from.
a. load itself c. vertical pressure from fresh concrete
b. horizontal pressure from fresh concrete d. None of the above
5. Forms must be watertight in order to______________________.
a. preserve the strength of concrete c. let air come out into the fresh concrete
b. minimize the leak of fluid d. All of the above
ACTIVITY II. Write true if the statement is correct and false if the statement is
misleading.
6. Use lumber with knots, wind shakes, and splinters.
7. Nailing all platforms limits slippage or tip off.
8. Place enough support for the platform.
9. Long protruding platforms beyond the supports is acceptable.
10. Properly secure the supports of the bracket and cantilever scaffolds.
