Details of Retirement / Replacement of more than 25 years old

Coal based Thermal Power Plants (as on 01.12.2017)

In order to conserve scarce natural resources like land, water and coal, Ministry of Power
advised CEA in August 2015 to explore the possibility of retiring /replacing the old inefficient thermal
generating units by installing new supercritical units.
In July 2016, CEA in consultation with various Power Utilities identified about 10,000 MW
capacity coal based thermal power plants in Govt. Sector, which are more than 25 years old (as on
31.03.2016) and could be retired / replaced by new super-critical units on the basis of un-economic
operation. Out of which, since Sept.'2015 to Nov.' 2017, coal based units in Govt. sector of total
capacity of 5745 MW have been retired and deleted from National Installed Capacity by CEA. The
details of these units are given at Table ‘A’.
In addition, 797.32 MW of private sector/ Gas based/ DG Set units have also been retired during
the same period. The details of these units are given at Table ‘B’.

Further, details of Coal based Thermal Power Units in Govt. Sector, which could be retired in
the remaining period of F.Y.17-18 & in the F.Y.18-19 are given below in Table ‘C’.
The status of the new super-critical thermal units (totaling 18560 MW capacity), which have
been proposed to be set up as replacement against the retired / proposed to be retired old subcritical
units (totaling 7738 MW capacity) is given at Table ‘D’.

Telangana Kothagudem TPS TSPGCL 782.5 1x800 EC obtained. Order placed. Zero date commenced on
Stage I to IV & 01/01/15.
Ramagundem’ B TPS
