The Differences and Similarities Between Hutchinson & Waters View, and Alousque's View On The Development of ESP Through Time

Hutchinson & Waters viewed the development of ESP through three factors: 1) The need for a common language of exchange due to increased global commerce after WWII. 2) A revolution in linguistics where the English needed is based on analysing learner's specialist area. 3) A focus on learner needs, interests, and objectives. Alousque's view was that ESP considered learner aims and needs in its design, shifted from structure to functions, used rhetorical and needs analysis to specify goals for ESP courses, and was influenced by discourse analysis and new technologies.

The differences and similarities between Hutchinson & Waters view, and Alousque's
view on the development of ESP through time.

1. Hutchinson & Waters view

● The demand of a brave new world, WII initiated an age of growth in
commerce, technology exchange and economy which led to the need of a
common language of exchange.
● A revolution in linguistics, tell me what you need English for and I will tell
you the English that you need. In other words the English needed by a
particular group of learners could be identified by analysing the linguistic
characteristics of their specialist area of work or study.
● A focus on the learner , educational psychology shedded lights on the
importance of learner's needs, interests and objectives towards the learning of
the English language.

2. Alousque's view

● The learners aims and needs were for the first time taken into consideration in
English teaching, designing a course tailored to the demands of particular
group of learners
● The shift from ELT field toward a more communicative view of language
teaching and learning (from structure of forms to notions and functions)
● Rhetorical analysis (identifying textual patterns and specify the linguistic
forms that signal these patterns, which later on formed the syllabus of ESP
courses.
● Needs analysis (needs were specified in terms of goals
● The strategies Approaches, shedding on the perceptual and psychological
factors underlying language learning.
● Discourse and genre analysis, learning centred approach that also influenced
course design.
● New technologies have brought a development in ESP pedagogy.
