Emergency procedures

An emergency procedure is a plan of actions to be conducted in a certain order or manner, in


response to a specific class of reasonably foreseeable emergency, a situation that poses an
immediate risk to health, life, property, or the environment.[1] Where a range of emergencies are
reasonably foreseeable, an emergency plan may be drawn up to manage each threat. Most
emergencies require urgent intervention to prevent a worsening of the situation, although in some
situations, mitigation may not be possible and agencies may only be able to offer palliative care
for the aftermath. The emergency plan should allow for these possibilities

Emergency case:

 Fire
 Collision
 Grounding
 Listing
 Sinking
 Cargo shifting

Rules must be applied on the vessel in emergency situation

each person of the crew must be provided with clear instructions that should be taken in
emergency cases,the muster list should be posted in important places in the ship such as bridge ,
engine room ,accommodation,Sketches and instructions with suitable language should be posted
inside the passengers room to clarify the following muster station ,procedures that should be
followed in emergency cases,how to wear life jackets the muster list should be completed before
the ship sealing the muster list should be approved by the administration.
The contents of muster list:

 How to order (abandon ship) in details

 The name and the rank of each individual in the crew


 Duties that should be followed by each individual in the crew in different emergency
cases

 Determine the substitute of the principals individuals of the crew

 Different alarm signals, which include:

 abandon ship ( . . . . . . . ‫) ــــــ‬

 Fire alarm (continuous whistle , at least 10 seconds )

 Man over board( ‫ )ـــ ـــ ـــ‬at least 4 times

Emergency organization
ž The emergency organization should be set up in any emergency
situation by:
 Raise the alarm
 Locate and assess the incident and possible danger
 Organize the man power and equipment

ž The Emergency Plan Organization

ž Command Team :
 Consists of the master + 3/0 + radio/off + A/B (helm’s man ) in bridge
 Control the response to emergency
 Should have means of internal and external communication (other party in ship ,
shore stations or rcc)

ž Emergency Team:
 This group should be under the command of senior officer it ‘s consists of (C/O –
2/E )+ Bosun + fitter + some good A/B & M.M

 They should assess the emergency situation and report to command control
 Advising what action should be taken and what assistance should be provide

 This group carry out the fire fighting or other emergencies

Back up emergency Team:
 Consists of 2nd/0 and 3rd/E or 4th /E + some A/B ,M.M + catering department
(c/cook & stewards)

 Stand by to assist the emergency party as instructed by the command center or


emergency party to provide services such as:

1. Spare fire extinguish , spare air cylinders , medical services stretcher & it’s party
& any extra fire equipment ’s

2. Close the water tight ventilation ,T/D.cover ,hatches ,p/p room ,V/Vs

3. Cooling round fire and check the extend of fire in adjacent parts

Engine EmergencyTeam:
 Consists of C/E + duty /E + Elect & duty M.M

 Should proved any emergency assistance from machinery spaces as instructed


by command center or emergency party such as start fire P/P , stop cargo P/P ,
start bilge P/P ..etc in tanker ship start I.G. start emergency generator , in case
of non limited fire co2 or hallon system operated by C/E

 The eng /group may be called to provide additional man power else
