MODULE 1

Chapter 1- Introduction to the Social Dimension of Education

APPLICATION:

1. Explain the relationship of various social theories and the functions of schools.

The relationship of various social theories and functions of school is that a

teacher and student is the same with the function of people who are

responsible for the implementation of the schools welfare. Consensus theory

explains wherein the students are also required to give their opinions or

suggestions on a certain idea same goes with the school admins. The school

will not have a better implementation of programs if the members of the

institution are not cooperating. On the other hand, we cannot deny the fact that

in every institution there are always different opinion/suggestions that may

lead to misunderstanding and conflict.

As what stated in Structural Functionalism it is simply means cooperation of

society. For example, an institution is consisting of a member, a teacher,

department head, administrator and a student. These people in the institution

were given or assigned in their designated area. One should learn to adapt to

their work environment for their team to succeed; a school has its primary goal

in order to attain their goals each must work together to gain their success.

There is saying that “You cannot give what you do not have” as a future

educator you need to have a broad mind for you to deliver the lesson to your

students effectively. If you are a teacher you need to well-equip yourself on

the different strategies that will suit the individual needs and differences of the

learners. Let us not forget that each students has its own uniqueness, let us not

focus on one’s strategy for we know that students do not have same

capabilities to learn. The students must learn to understand their differences.

Facilitating the student does not revolving on teaching the lesson but also

teaching great values to influence other student.

Post Activity:

Interview a teacher on the influence of conflict and consensus theories on their work as

teacher.

Teacher’s Name: Joren Baynosa Dayanan

Universal School Applied Technology (USAT)

I asked him how conflict and consensus theories influenced him as a teacher. And how he

handle this situation if this happen to him and his student or co-teachers. He stated that:

As a teacher, I believe that there are a lot of factors that classroom management influences

conflict and consensus theory.

For example, conflict theories apply when a teacher gives a task to a certain student but

his/her classmates do not participate. Based on my experience, one time I gave my class

president a certain task to accomplished with hid classmate that need to class participation in

order to finish the task on time but his classmates did not participate. In this situation, there is

a leadership problem with my class president and attitude the rest of the student, it entails that

there is a class conflict. That is why being a teacher needs a lot of effort especially when

coping up with your students capabilities helps us teachers identify their strength so that we

can motivate them to excel.

On the other hand, consensus applies when a teacher gives general agreement or rules to the

students. In my case, I always set rules with my students for them to agree with. In this way,

they are aware of the things that they need to do or they can make an adjustment in order to

protect one’s self (protecting one’s feeling whether it is emotional or physical). Having rules

inside the classroom is essential for them. I, as a teacher really do share my rules to them and

ask them if they are good with it. This entails that everyone’s feeling is being protected.
