Reflection Paper
The handbook “Worker’s Statutory Monetary Benefits” is a 2020
Edition published by the Department of Labor and Employment, Bureau
of Working Conditions. The initiative of circulating this material is a
great help to the readers. As defined by Wikipedia, “A handbook is a type
of reference work or other collection of instructions, that is intended to
provide a ready reference. The term originally applied to a small or
portable book containing information useful for its owner. Handbooks
may deal with any topic and are generally compendiums of information
in a particular field or about a particular technique. They are designed to
be easily consulted and provide quick answers in a certain area.” Even
without someone from the DOLE who will explain personally about the
topics, the readers will understand the information written in the
handbook. The following topics about the minimum wage, premium pay,
overtime pay, night shift differential, service charges, service incentive
leave, maternity leave, paternity leave, parental leave for solo parents,
leave for victims of violence against women and their children, special
leave for women, thirteenth-month pay, separation pay, retirement pay,
benefits under the employees’ compensation program, Social Security
benefits, PAG-IBIG benefits are the things that everyone must know. It is
1
very important that everyone can read this because the handbook is very
informative.
Some workers don’t know about these statutory benefits and some
also don’t have concrete information about the benefits that they should
be enjoying as part of the labor force especially the minimum wage. The
wage that some workers are receiving is less than what is mandated by
law and this is not just because they are not well-compensated. They’ve
worked hard in an organization and yet they are underpaid. These people
should be informed about what is the minimum wage rate. Aside from
that, there are also workers who don’t know about the other benefits like
holiday pay, overtime pay, night shift differential, etc. They lack
knowledge about it. They don’t know that they can receive another
monetary benefit other than the salary. Maternity and paternity leave is
beneficial to parents because at the very young age of their newborn
child he/she needs the care of the parents. The child must be nurtured
by the parents and the mother also need to regain her strength before
going back to work. Women no longer need to choose between a career
and having a family. Women will be able to enjoy time with their newborn
baby without financial concerns. Parents will be better able to afford the
necessary medical care for both mother and baby. Paternity leave is also
beneficial to a father because it provides fathers with time away from
work to help care for a new child, as well care for other children and help
the mother. When it comes to the government mandatory benefits like

GSIS,SSS, Philhealth, and PAG-IBIG, it is advisable that employees will
monitor the contributions deducted from their salary they were remitted
by the company they are working. They were issues about the
unremitted contributions of the employees. If it happened, there may be
a problem with the benefits that a worker can get from the mentioned
agencies. The workers must also be informed about the process of the
separation and retirement pay. There are workers who were fired-out by
the employers without following the just process.
This handbook is a great help to all working individuals in private
and public organizations. Each topic is well-explained and anyone
reading it can understand the information the agency is trying to relay to
the public. It aimed for awareness that as workers we have our right to
just compensation and other benefits.
