The document discusses earthworks, which involve moving and processing large quantities of soil or rock to reconfigure site topography for various engineering projects such as roads, railways, and irrigation systems. It explains the processes of cutting and filling to achieve desired topography and introduces the prismoidal formula for estimating the volume of irregular shapes. An example is provided to illustrate the application of the prismoidal formula in calculating the volume of earth removed from a construction site.

Earthworks are engineering works created through the Applications of Earthwork

moving and/or processing of massive quantities of soil or
Typically, earthwork is done in the following projects:
unformed rock. Road works
Railways
Earthwork is done to reconfigure the topography of a site to Irrigation project such as canals and dams
achieve the design levels. Other common earthwork applications are land grading to reconfigure
the topography of a site, or to stabilize slopes
Earthwork involves cutting and filling to achieve the required
topography.

Cutting
Cutting is the process of excavating earth material from a work
location to achieve the desired topography.
Filling
Filling is the process of moving the excavated material or additional
earth material to a work location to achieve the desired topography.

Prismoidal formula is accurate in finding the volume of

prisms, pyramids, wedges, and prismoids having irregular
end sections. The estimation of earthwork gives nearly an
accurate volume.
