Questions:
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the 8 questions with a minimum of 50 words for each one.
1. What do you know?
a. Question:
1. What makes a piece of art beautiful?
Art is beautiful because it is intended to appeal and connect with
human emotion. Artists may express something so that their
audience is stimulated in some way—creating feelings, religious
faith, curiosity, interest, identification with a group, memories,
thoughts, or creativity. It is so human that we are so fascinated by
it. It translates our joy, ecstasy, melancholy or despair into
something that another human being can relate to. I think art is
beautiful because it has become that connection we have to
another being in ways we sometimes do not expect.
2. How important are personal tastes when judging the quality of art?
Personal taste in aesthetic judgments because an aesthetic
experience is a free play of imagination and understanding. We
appreciate what we understand and what we feel a connection to.
If there is no connection, an artwork may not be valued by a
person.
b. Explain the reason why you gave that answer? What was in your mind?
For me art makes our imaginations soar . And our imagination works in
mysterious ways and that varies from person to person. I like to think of
the phrase, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You can’t blame
another person for liking something or someone just because their tastes
is different from yours. It’s just a matter of perspective.
1. Analysis
a. Question: Which among the pictures do you consider an artwork?
I consider picture number 1 as an artwork because it is an interpretation
of a person by the artist. That is how the artist sees the girl. His caricature
of her is made with exaggerated features. It is similar yet not. That is
because it is an imitation of reality taken to another level. After all, art is a
matter of perspective.
b. Which among the pictures gives greater influence to Philippine art?
Explain your reason?
I think the picture that gives influence to Philippine art is all of the
given examples. Picture number 1 shows a man drawing a
caricature of a girl. Caricatures are often made by Filipino
illustrators to express their opinions on current issues in our
country. The second picture which shows a man scrutinizing a
painting. It reminds me of the time when Filipino artists are figuring
out how to express their identity on their art. The third one is about
the artists attachment to his environment. And the last picture of an
add for plastic surgery implies the influence of other countries art. I
feel that because we are exposed to the beauty standards of other
countries we also imitate them.
2. Assessment
a. What moral lesson do you see in the pictures?
The moral lesson I have learned from these pictures are: Art is a matter of
perspective, Art is a way to interpret reality, Art is an identity and lastly.
Art is influenced by others but it is up to the artist if he would let himself be
affected or let it inspire his creativity.
b. Why do you think this can be an avenue for the discussion and
dissemination of realities in our country?
Aesthetics has long been a convoluted topic. That is because
personal taste varies from one person to another. But, there
are arts that receive universal acknowledgement because it is
so striking it captures most people’s attention. I think, if a
Filipino artist can reach that level of skill, his artworks will
leave a lasting impact on the people. And if he would highlight
the realities of our nation with his art, more people would be
aware of the issues of our country.
3. Reflections
a. What significant lesson did you find it personal?
I find the lesson on Aesthetics as a personal journey. There is so much
more to learn about art and I find it a very fascinating topic. It also made
me aware that art is more valued for its uniqueness even if the subject is
pretty mundane.
b. In what part of the lesson did you find easy or hard to illustrate in the way
that you learned?
Aesthetics, if I think about it is quite complicated. It requires reflection
and looking with not just your perspective but of others too. What makes
is easy is because we have developed our own tastes and know what is
beautiful to us. But, to apply judgement on a work of art makes it a bit
difficult because you have to study the details and not just rely on your
own judgement but on a set of standards too.
