activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:
Presenting a Coherent and Comprehensive Report on Differing
Viewpoints on an Issue.

1. Explain what a coherent and comprehensive report is;

2. Arrange the sentences in the paragraph logically; and
3. Write a coherent and comprehensive report on differing viewpoints.

PRETEST

expresses a personal viewpoint and NO if it doesn’t.

1. It is in the news that President Duterte visits Russia.

2. She thinks being a flight attendant suits her best.

3. I believe Mt. Mayon is the most majestic volcano in the world.

4. My parents believe that nothing is more valuable than a good

education.

5. According to Science, it is impossible to have life on Earth without

the Sun.

RECAP

We have learned during the previous quarter how to relate an

experience suitable to the occasion. To do so, we are expected to be mindful
in expressing our thoughts whether it be written or oral so that our
audience can grasp what we are talking about. Communication skills are
very important if we want to convey our views and to be understood by
others.

6
LESSON

Unscramble the letters of every word to reveal a well-known quote.

FITAH NI GDO CNA MVEO MUOTNIASN

When writing or orally presenting an issue, we often tend to discuss it

by using sources that only agree with us. Sometimes, our audience reacts
but there is a way to ease the tension. We must listen to them and let them
express their thoughts, too. By paying attention to what others say, we get
to realize that they may be correct at some point.

Today, let us talk about presenting a coherent and comprehensive

report on differing viewpoints on an issue.

First, let us discuss how to compose a clear and coherent report on

differing points of view. In every presentation, we have to make sure that
everybody can understand what we are saying, whether it be written or
spoken. Our audience must always be considered because they are the
receivers of our message. Here are the things to remember on how to make a
report on differing viewpoints:

1. The report must have a single generalization that serves as the focus
of attention. That is the topic sentence.

The topic sentence expresses the main idea of the paragraph where it
appears. There should only be one topic sentence for every paragraph of
your report. So, if you will limit your report with just one paragraph, you
only need one topic sentence.

2. The writer must control the content of every other sentence in the
organization of the report.

Unnecessary or needless words and sentences must be removed. Only

sentences which support the topic sentence must be included in your
report.

3. The report must have more specific information or details than the
topic sentence. It should also keep the topic sentence as the central
point of the report.

Since the topic sentence provides the main idea in a report or

paragraph, the rest of the sentences are expected to give more detailed
explanations, even examples that will support the idea given by the topic
sentence.

7
Take a look at this illustration.

Filipino resilience, Digital Image, ICTworks, October 2, 2017, https://www.ictworks.org/apply-now-3-

million-gbp-disaster-response-innovation/#.XvRhz_kzbIU

This is a picture showing the resilience of the Filipino spirit in times of

calamity. The mother with a baby in her arms smiles amidst the chaos
brought about by a strong typhoon. This picture is telling us that it is
natural for Filipinos to stay positive and never give up easily.

Therefore, we can have this as our topic sentence:

Filipinos are naturally resilient people.

Now that we have a topic sentence, let us give specific information or

details which are all focused on the topic sentence. We can have three
sentences for our example,

1. Even in hardships, Filipinos can still manage to smile and crack jokes.

2. Some people argue that resilience may have helped most Filipinos
survive, but not all.

3. Their resilient spirit makes it easier for them to bounce back to normal
after a calamity.

All these three statements talk about the resilience of Filipinos which
is the topic sentence. For coherence, arrange the supporting sentences in
logical order so that your report will be easily understood. You can mention
your topic sentence either at the beginning or towards the end of the report.
As a result, your finished composition should be something like this:

Filipinos are naturally resilient people. Their resilient spirit makes it

easier for them to bounce back to normal after a calamity. Even in
hardships, Filipinos can still manage to smile and crack jokes. Yet, some
people argue that resilience may have helped most Filipinos survive, but not
all.

This report is now ready for presentation.

Guided Practice

Look at the illustration. There are schoolchildren in the picture. Some

of them are cultivating the plants while others are either fetching water or
watering the vegetation around them.

Filipino Schoolchildren in the Garden, Digital Image, October2011,

Choose four (4) sentences that express ideas about the picture, including
the topic sentence. Write down the number of sentences that you chose.

1. Fruits and vegetables are the primary sources of vitamins.

2. Children learn to nurture the environment thru gardening.
3. Children living in provinces enjoy running in the fields.
4. Gardening is a worthwhile activity not just for the old but also for the
young ones.
5. Aside from learning, they also enjoy nature when they do a gardening
activity.
6. Instead of playing online games, gardening can be an alternative activity
for children.

Let’s say, you have chosen these sentences. Now, arrange for them to
make a coherent report. Remember, coherence requires you to logically and
sensibly organize the sentences. Use numbers 1 to 4 to represent the correct
order of the sentences.

____ Children learn to nurture the environment thru gardening.

____ Gardening is a worthwhile activity not just for the old but also for the
young ones.

____ Aside from learning, they also enjoy nature when they do a gardening
activity.

____ Instead of playing online games, gardening can be an alternative
