Understanding Globalization: Week 6

Globalization has both positive and negative effects on individuals, businesses, and governments. For individuals in developing nations, globalization has improved standards of living through better infrastructure, healthcare, and education. However, it has negatively impacted individuals in developed nations by moving manufacturing jobs overseas where costs are lower. For businesses, globalization can positively or negatively impact product life cycles and balance sheets. It provides access to new markets but also increases competition. Governments must create policies around issues like trade and monetary regulation in the globalized world.

unregulated market economy. Today, globalization has grown due to advances
in transportation and communication technology. With the increased global interactions
comes the growth of international trade, ideas, and culture. Globalization is primarily an
economic process of interaction and integration that's associated with social and cultural
aspects.
However, conflicts and diplomacy are also large parts of the history of

LESSON

Effects of Globalization
1 ______________________________________________________

Learning Concept
Globalization has both positive and negative effects. On an individual level,
globalization affects both the standard of life and the quality of life. On a business level,
globalization affects an organization's product life cycle and an organization's balance
sheet. Globalization also affects how governments throughout the world create policies
affecting areas such as monetary regulation and trade. Culturally, in the Philippines,
Globalization can be clearly portrayed on how teenagers love to watch Koreanovelas and
foreign songs as well. We tend to adopt to what’s new and hot from other countries that
we almost have compromised the culture and customs that we also have.
Individual Effects
On an individual level, globalization has affected the standard of life and quality of
life of individuals and families throughout the world. Standard of living is the level of
wealth, comfort, material goods, and necessities available to a certain socio-economic
class in a certain geographic area. Quality of life is the degree to which a person enjoys
the important possibilities of his or her life. In many instances, quality of life has improved
for those who live in developing nations. For many developing nations, globalization has
led to an improvement in standard of living through improved roads and transportation,
improved health care, and improved education due to the global expansion of
corporations. However, globalization has had a negative effect on individuals who live in
developed nations. This is due to the fact that corporations now have the option of
establishing manufacturing operations in nations where manufacturing and production
costs are less expensive. As a result, many manufacturing jobs leave developed nations
and move to developing nations.
Corporate Effects
On a corporate level, globalization has had an effect on organizations' product or
service life cycle. Product life cycle is the period of time over which an item is developed,
brought to market and eventually removed from the world market. One such example of
globalization having a positive effect on a product's life cycle would be the Kinder Egg.
Kinder Eggs are egged-shaped chocolate candies with tiny toys inside and are very
popular with children. However, due to the fact that the tiny toys may be a choking hazard
for children, the United States banned the sale of these candies. However, due to
globalization, the Kinder Egg is still a popular candy sold in Canada and several countries
throughout Europe.

Moreover,
globalization could have a
negative effect on
corporation's balance sheets.
An example of globalization
having a negative effect on a
corporation's balance sheet
can be found in the Philippine
industry. For years,
plasticwares from Asian
nations like China in particular
has come into the Philippines.
This plasticwares from China
is cheaper than the
plasticwares manufactured in
the Philippines as we all know Source: https://slideplayer.com/slide/8413695/

materials and labors are

cheap also in China. As a result, many corporations and organizations that need plastics
to manufacture their goods purchase the China plastics over the Philippine plastics in
order to decrease their own production cost. This had an ongoing negative effect on the
balance sheets of plastic companies in the Philippines.

LESSON

Interconnected through
2 collaboration and cooperation
________________________________________________________

Learning Concept

Do you believe we are connected? Yes, we certainly are! We all have the chance
to be connected with one another especially from people in other countries. Thanks to
social media and other online peripherals we are able to see at close things which are
really far from us. We also share the same knowledge and thoughts of our researches
which are already readily available online. The cars we have in the Philippines are also
the same car brand across the globe. The chocolates made from the United States are
the same chocolates we also have in our shelves. We travel from one country to another.
We may have the different skin color but we are connected by faith and long been, we
already by done so many collaboration and cooperation.
Let us define these three important words for clarity purposes:
 Interconnectedness is the state of being connected with each other.
 Cooperation is the process of working together to the same end.
 Collaboration is the action of working with someone to produce or create
something.

Cooperation among countries can help solve joint problems, and share knowledge
and best practices. Cooperation often emerges around 3 common vectors:
 common challenges that extend
beyond national borders;
 political, cultural, religious and
economic commonalities that
foster integration;
 inter-country engagement in
regional and/or global processes.

In health, many countries

experience similar health challenges Source: https://medium.com/@beratzfidan/the-difference-between-
cooperation-and-collaboration-4cda8868502f
and concerns. Cooperation among
countries can be an effective tool to strengthen, share and accelerate health development
within countries and across regions. It involves creating, adapting, transferring and
sharing knowledge and experiences to improve health – while also making the most of
existing resources and capacities. World Health Organization (WHO) facilitates

cooperation among countries around their shared challenges and concerns to achieve
public health solutions. Over the years, many have made important policies in addressing
shared health goals through cooperation with others.
In education, country to country had been offering teacher and student exchange
program wherein participants are given the time and opportunity to experience on the
kind of education being offered from other countries. This in time, can build benchmarking
and somehow may give chance to adopt to possible changes all in the hope of providing
quality education. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) – is very facilitative and aimed at assisting, supporting, and complementing
the national efforts of member states to eliminate illiteracy and to extend free education
for all. UNESCO also seeks to encourage the free exchange of ideas and knowledge by
organizing conferences and providing clearinghouse and exchange services.
In environmental protection, we are truly interconnectedness by this specially when
dealing about things that we can do when talking about climate change. Heads of every
country are working collaboratively in re-assuring that everybody is working towards
environmental protection for we all know in a a fact that we all live in the same planet
called earth.

LESSON
Contributions of the Parts
3 to a Whole
______________________________________________________

Learning Concept
“The whole is greater than the part.”
The quote is telling us about how much better things are together than as pieces.
Let us say, a rose. The flower is lovely itself but if only the roots and the rest of the stem
is there, chances are its beauty should have
lasted much longer. This quote also reminds
us that what one can do, many can do better.
At least in most cases. Put the opposite way,
if you take something that works and remove
some parts, it’s not as useful as it was.
Precisely, like a car, having it complete is
good but having it run on highway with its
wheels missing is something you yourself
could not imagine. But putting that part The importance of a tire in the operation of the car.
back in, the thing is whole again, and much Source: https://historygarage.com/1904-cars-spare-no-tires/
more useful than the pile of parts it was before.
Why is being part of the whole important?

Any one with modern invention is nice, but using a phone in place without electricity
isn’t good for very long. In human terms, the quote is about being more by being part of
a group. One person can do a lot, but more people can devote themselves to different
tasks. As the old saying goes, “together we stand, divided we fall”.
If you add your ability and your talents, you should do at least a little better than
you were before, and the group should also be doing better. This can also be applied to
your social life as well. One person can have a lot of fun, but some things are better in a
group. Cheering for your favorite sports team can be fun, but it’s more fun with friends.
Think of the difference between sitting at a campfire alone and having friends with you to
share stories.

Try looking at the success of a person in your neighborhood. His success is a
product of collaborative effort by him and the people he met along the way – his
classmates, friends, teachers, colleagues, boss, loved ones and of course by the grace
of God. Like you, you are the person you are now because of the experiences either good
or bad from the people you have dealings and encountered with.

food chain KFC also originated from
the United States of America while
the most popular fast food chain
Jollibee originated from the
Philippines.
