Math Trail

The document describes a field trip taken by Ms. Lam's math class to Starbucks to explore mathematical concepts they encounter, including counting various objects in the store, identifying shapes, estimating volumes, learning about division and sharing by discussing how to split coffee cake among friends. The class stops at different areas of the store like the fridge, art board, coffee barista, and snack area to have math-related discussions prompted by observation and questions.

A field trip to
Starbucks
The new school year begins and Ms.Lam
decides to take her class to Starbucks as
a trip down memory lane to her job
before teaching. Here is the first pit stop
to their math trail journey
Grab n’ go Fridge
As we walk into the cafe, the fridge
under the pastry case catches our
attention. Here are some question 1. How many rectangular shaped bottles do
to prompt their thinking. you see?

2. How many blue items do you see?

3. Do you see any other shapes?

Art Board
The next attraction was the blackboard
in front of the coffee machines. The
drawings and colours really caught the
children’s attention!

1. How many circles do you see?

2. Can you name any 3D shapes you may see in this picture?

3. How many corners does the board have?

Barista in action
Next, we ran into a Barista named
Jenny who was seen pouring coffee
into mini sample cups. This allowed us
to discuss volume.
1. How many cups are empty? How many cups
are full?
2. In that small cup how many gulps do you
think it would take to finish?
3. If I drank 3 of the sample cups, how many
empty cups would we have now?
4. How many seconds do you think it takes to
fill the cup?
Coffee Cake!
We then decided to stop for a snack. Ms.Lam
only had enough for 2 pieces of coffee cake.
Here the children learn how to divide and
share.

1. If Ms.Lam cuts the coffee cake into 8 pieces,

but we have 10 friends how many pieces is she
missing?

2. If Ms.Lam were to split the 8 pieces in half

how many more pieces would she have?

3. What two numbers make 8?

__ + __ = __
Thank
you!
