IDU Reflection
1. What connections did you make between Humanities and Science and the
assessment task?
I have made many connections between science and humanities during
this assessment task which correlate with each other. The biggest being
that whenever a plate movement occurs between two plates the land
above always gets affected. For example, the San Andreas Faultline is
two tectonic plates grazing past each other in the opposite direction, that
movement results in earthquakes which can damage the infrastructure
which is built above ground.
2. Explain whether it is useful or not to combine Humanities and Science to
solve a problem? Justify your answer. (Would world problems be solved
if only one expertise was involved or do you need expertise from
different fields?)
I believe it is useful to combine Humanities and Science to solve
problems because it would mean that the people who work in the science
field could predict where a seismic activity is about to occur and that
would mean that the people in the humanitarian field could prepare for
the event by evacuating the area and have emergency services ready in
case of casualties.
3. Was it possible for the 2 cultures to come together without conflict?
I think it would be possible for Australia and Indonesia to come together
without too much conflict because Australia is a multicultural country
which means that it has people from many different cultures and
backgrounds. So, if it were to landlock with Indonesia I think that it
would be able to accept them as part of the Australian society. The only
conflict I think would be illegal immigration.
4. What was needed to facilitate 2 cultures coming together and what
conflicts arose?
To facilitate the two cultures coming together I think new laws would
need to be made regarding immigration and I think that the government
would need to build a border at where the two countries get landlocked to
prevent illegal immigration. A conflict which could arise would be illegal
immigration since Indonesia is a highly populated country many people
might want to cross into Australia for a better life. A great example being
citizens from Mexico illegally crossing into the United States.
5. What did you learn from the clashing of continents?
I learnt that from the clashing of continents many problems arise and that
many people suffer from tectonic plate movements. Such as when two
plate converge on each other many earthquakes would be created which
would cause floods and tsunamis which would ultimately result in
damage of infrastructure and agricultural land for both continents.
6. How did you work as a pair/group? Explain.
As a group of four we decided that two of us would look at the science
side of things and that two of us would look at the humanities side of
things and when both pairs finish researching their information, we would
share it among ourselves and then write in our own words onto our
booklets. During the model making we chose to make a practical model
to represent our findings.
7. What problems did you overcome?
A problem that we had to overcome was that one of our group members
laptop went missing on which meant that for the time being he had to use
a loan laptop and start his work again. That meant that all the information
he had he could not share with us so it left us a little behind on the
humanity side of things. Another problem that occurred was that we did
not read the model designing criteria in depth which caused us to fall
behind a little bit.
8. If you were to do this model and report again, what would you change or
do differently?
If I were to do this model and report again, I would probably set goals for
myself to have a specific part of the assessment task to be done by a
certain date so that I don’t fall behind as I did a little bit during this task.
Something else I would do differently would be to read the criteria in
depth because for the model designing my group and I did not read the
criteria for it and it turned out that we were actually missing a lot of
things and so we had to add those things last minute.
9. After looking at other groups, has it changed some of your ideas or what
would you have added?
After looking at some group’s models, I think that our model was around
the same level as other groups but the only thing that was different was
that we were doing a practical of what is occurring rather than just having
text on the model to show what is occurring.
