The Earl of Sandwich: History of the Sandwich

Who has not at one time or another enjoyed a great-tasting sandwich? Whether open-faced or
closed-faced, served hot or cold or dressed with tomato, cheese or ham slices—or with any
other ingredient for that matter—it is a favourite with young and old alike. A veritable chameleon
due to its many different forms, the sandwich makes its appearance at the buffet table as the
elegant finger-food we call “canapés”! How did it all begin you ask? Well, the origins of our
beloved “sandwich” were anything but humble!

The setting is mid-eighteenth century London. Lord Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, is hungry—
yet he refuses to leave the card table. So, his ever attentive and resourceful cook concocts a
meal for him that could be eaten anywhere. Of course, the rest is history.
