Course reflection
Throughout the course I did not imagine learning the things I did, upon taking the course
I imagen I would just learn what drugs do to affect the body and mind. To my surprise the world
of drugs is another thing than I imagen. I managed to learn the types of drugs, distribution of the
drug, affects of the drugs, and the harms to society with these drugs. We learned about the types
of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, tobacco, and alcohol. For cocaine I managed to learn
a huge contribution Mexico and Colombia have with producing and contributing to other places
around the world. Heroin was an interesting subject for me to learn, I learned that In Germany
people create an over-the-counter heroin so dangerous that many people don’t manage to learn
over a year within taking the substance this is also known as the crocodile skin drug. Marijuana I
learned that over the years they compared the violence rate from when marijuana wasn’t legal to
now having legal marijuana, they notice the low rate in violence and gang relationships in the
community. And in tobacco I found very interesting how tobacco was originated as a native
American practice, in ceremonies, and medical practice as well, I never thought native
Americans used it for medicines or ceremonies. With alcohol I wasn’t a surprise to learn the
things I did, I knew alcohol addiction is a small seen issue that not many people realize they are
actually suffering through.

This course has impacted my life in the sense that I use to be close minded in the subject
but also in the senses that I also assumed those with addictions were too “lazy” to solve their
issues. Taking this course, I learned that those who misfortunately end with an addiction to a
substance suffer through a lot, with withdraws. I learned that withdraws come in many different
forms, such as body aches, anxiety, sweating, fatigue, depression, seizures, and hallucinations.
Or that in some cases people get to the point where the only feel alive with the substance, so if I
person stops taking said drug, their body starts to shut down and may cause death. Learning all
this manage to help me be a better person in understand to help those in need of support. To be
able to reassure anyone who’s going through an addiction withdraws feel supported to better
their lives. That these individuals aren’t “lazy” people but regular people suffering trying to get
their life back to normal.
The impact this course will have in my future will be, that I am now knowledgeable with
the issue in hand when it comes to substance abuse, drug war, and addiction/withdraws. Which is
the main key to help those around us, the more people are knowledgeable of the issue, the better
chance we have to help those suffering and stop the drug war from increasing, along with
stopping the death rate related to drug abuse. This also helps stop children from witnessing drug
abuse where they grow up in that toxic/ dangerous environment, which could either affect in the
children themselves deciding to partake drug themselves in the future or not. Another form this
helps me in the future is, if I had anyone in my life that show early signs of drug addiction, I will
know what to expect, and how to properly handle the situation without making the individual
feel bad about addressing the abuse in hand.

The only course other course I believe ties in with HLTH 1050 (Life, society, and drug)
would be my HUMA 1100 (intro to humanities) since substance abuse, distribution, and
addiction is an issue in an the affects our society as a whole. In humanities we learn the issues we
see in hand which are usually discrimination, religion, and gender equalities. Where we talk
about how these issues affect our community and what we believe is the cause or what could
help in these situations. And since drug abuse is not only an issue that affect the substance taker
but also those around them as well, therefore making this a society issue which is what intro to
humanities focuses on and talks about.
