Mitsubishi uses the same type of transmission called the F5A51
These units are assembled in the same manner. 
The major difference is the F5A51 uses a 6 solenoid valve body. 
The Hyundai/Kia use a 7 solenoid valve body
Front Pump
The front pump for the A5HF1 is a fairly generic gerotor style pump. The 
tricky part is the pump alignment.

The pump to converter and stator support to 
main case is practically an interference fit.

• Assemble the pump body and the stator (leave bolts loose).
• Secure the pump to the main case.
• Bolt the converter housing to the main case.

• Tighten the bolts securing the pump body to the stator support 
through the center of the case.
• Disassemble the case halves.
• Remove the pup from the main case.
• Torque the stator to pump body bolts to 909‐110 inch pounds.

Install the sonnax alignment tool into the pump 
Assemble the pump body and the  and torque the bolts to 90 – 110 in.lbs.

aligning the internal components of the converter

Rebuild/Assembly Tips
In part 1 we did not take the output transfer gear out of the case. It’s a good idea prior to cleaning 
the case to remove the transfer gear/support out of the case. Set aside and lightly clean with solvent.

Line up the tab on 
the low/reverse 
piston. Failure to do 
so will lead to failed 
low/reverse clutch or 
piston damage.

Always replace the 
lip seal on the 
bottom side of the 
low sprag race. 
This ensures a 
solid flow of lube 
oil to the sprag.

Prior to installing the 
band, remove the band 
anchor bolt. Now install 
the band around the 
direct  drum and 
reinstall the anchor bolt 
with a new O‐ring.
End Play Check
Set the H‐gauge on the case and let the  Front end clearance should 
plunger down into the drum where the  be .028 in. ‐ .57 in. It is
