EXPLORING YARN

Unusual fibres
Rhian Drinkwater looks at how to take a step beyond
the usual wools, cottons and acrylics with some less
common fibres that still crochet up with style.

L
ike many crocheters, probably 90% of my crafting is
done using wool, cotton or acrylic yarns. They’re vastly
popular, and with good reason – between them they
cover the bases of being soft, stretchy, hardwearing,
colourful, great value and easy to use. But of course, we can
actually crochet with anything that can be pulled into a yarn,
from cut-up plastic bags to magnetic tape, electrical wire and
more. Unusual yarns give us great opportunities to experiment
with different structures, textures and finish, as well as just the
fun of trying something new. Here I’m going to look at some yarns
that fall somewhere between the two – commercial, made-to-be-
crocheted yarns you can buy from your favourite yarn shop, but
that use fibres a little less common than the norm…

How would you describe the qualities of the
Tanami yarn?
Larissa: Heaven in a skein! It’s incredibly soft, lightweight
and very stroke-able. The baby camel has a very low micron
count, making it extra fine and soft against the skin. It has a
gentle halo that is reminiscent of cashmere, but the fibres TANAMI

When I’m at yarn shows I always have a swatch of the Tanami

How do you find the yarn takes dye?

Larissa: Wonderfully! It’s a very different yarn to work with in
terms of the dyeing process, and my repeatable colourways
often look very different on the Tanami compared to
Bluefaced Leicester for instance. The base yarn starts out
camel coloured (of course!) so that adds an extra depth and
richness to the colours. I absolutely love how the baby camel
lends itself to sophisticated colour blends, and the 50% silk
provides the sheen and highlights.

TENSION
Exact tension is not crucial for
this design – simply aim for
a relaxed drape.

MEASUREMENTS

DESIGNER BIOGRAPHY
Rhian is a crochet and knitting
designer and the editor of Inside

practical, everyday projects and
adores working with hand-dyed
yarn. View more of her designs at

rhian-drinkwater.

PATTERN NOTES
The pink stripe patterning is
inspired by the mathematical
Fibonacci sequence. For a more
regular stripe, try working the
main grey half of the scarf then
two rows of pink, two rows of
grey, four rows of pink, four rows
of grey, eight rows of pink etc,
ending with a pink stripe.

When changing colour, draw

through new colour on last yoh of
previous st rather than fastening
off, but leave enough yarn
between stripes to cut and weave
in ends when finished.

YARN ALTERNATIVES
This pattern would also work well in
a raffia yarn such as Adriafil Rafia.

TENSION
Work Rnds 1–6 to make a coaster
measuring 12cm/4½in, using
5mm hook, or size required to
obtain tension.

MEASUREMENTS
Finished coaster measures
12cm/4½in diameter; table mat
measures 22cm/8½in.

DESIGNER BIOGRAPHY
Susie Johns studied Fine Art at
The Slade School before making her
career in publishing. She has written
and illustrated more than 30 books
on a variety of creative subjects,
particularly knitting and crochet.

PATTERN NOTES
The tension is quite tight, to
create a firm fabric, so each
coaster and table mat will need to
be blocked once you’ve finished.
To do this, press with a warm iron
with a little steam.

of each round.

Stuff the head and body as you go.

Leave long tails at the ends of
each piece for making up.

Safety eyes are not recommended

for small children. If in doubt,
embroider the eyes instead.

are to face before attaching then

once you’ve got the

it’s easy to work all the
stitches you need, meaning you can make anything
from simple granny motifs to complex garments
worked in elaborate stitch patterns.
Claire Montgomerie has put together this great
guide to all the crochet basics. From stitches to
slip knots, tension, abbreviations, working in the

everything you need to know to make a start on
your new favourite hobby. Claire’s number one tip
is to practise the chain stitch before you move on
to anything else, as once you’ve got the hang of
creating smooth, even chains, you’ll find it easy
to move on to all the other techniques. If at any
point you feel as if you have lost your hold, go back
to those comforting lengths of chain until your
confidence returns.
Crochet is a wonderful hobby that can give you

SHAPING, COLOURWORK & TENSION

Once you’ve learned simple shaping stitches, you can create almost any garment – and add
in different colours as you go with our simple technique. Make sure to check your tension first
though, or your finished piece could be completely the wrong size!

INCREASING JOINING IN TENSION/GAUGE

A NEW COLOUR
To join in a new colour (or a new ball
of the same colour), you can simply
fasten off the old yarn and then attach
the new colour with a slip stitch into the
top of the last stitch made. However,
for a neater join, you can also work the
colour change as follows:
