What is a Continent?

Did you know that there are seven continents on Earth? A continent is like a massive piece of land. The seven
continents are called: Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The weather,
landscapes and animal life is different on each continent.

Continents are made up of smaller pieces of land called countries. Do you know the name of your country?

Asia is the largest of the seven continents. China and India are countries in Asia. Mount Everest is the highest
mountain in the world and is also in Asia. Asia has a huge desert (a place that has very little rain) called the Gobi
desert. There are also rainforests and jungles in Asia.

Africa has a huge desert called the Sahara Desert. It also has the longest river in the world called the Nile.

Antarctica is one of the coldest places on Earth. Have you heard of the North Pole? The South Pole is a place in
Antarctica.

Australia is a continent and also a country. Australia has many islands that are pieces of land surrounded by
water.

Europe has over 40 countries. Spain and Italy are warm countries in Europe. Sweden and Norway are also
countries in Europe but they are cold countries.

North America is made up of the United States, Canada, Mexico and lots of smaller countries. You have
probably heard of the Mississippi River. It is a long river in North America.

South America has the largest rainforest on Earth. It is called the Amazon Rainforest. Rainforests have lots of rain
and provide homes for many animals. Tigers, jaguars, monkeys and parrots are some of the animals that live in a
rainforest.
