Digital Moviemaking: by Leandre Dotstry Ms. Watts 6 Period 3/3/11

Digital movie making has become easier and more accessible with technology. YouTube was created in 2006 and allowed many people to share digital movies, helping digital movie making gain popularity. Key factors in digital movie making include having a good idea, computer equipment for editing, and choosing file formats like MPEG for sharing movies online or through social media. While digital movie making provides more opportunities for filmmakers, it also raises ethical questions around the purpose and audience for movies as well as how to handle potential fame from online videos. Overall success in digital movie making depends on creating high quality content that engages audiences.

THE LIFE OF MOVIEMAKING!

Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim are all inspiring movie makers. They

have been making movies for just about three years. They have made the most

movies in the world because they have a program called YouTube; it has the most

movies ever. YouTube was the best invention of 2006. Three months after YouTube

was created, the slogan, “Broadcast yourself” went live. A lot of people like

YouTube and want to buy it, but Google spent $1.65 billion to buy YouTube so now

no one can get it. Over the last five years, many internationally renowned

filmmakers have embraced the all-digital format. Digital filmmaking’s popularity

initially came about because a slew of directors wanted to try out new technologies

for their own work. These new improvements are changing the digital moviemaking

landscape in spectacular ways. Digital moviemaking wouldn’t be getting nearly as

much attention if it weren’t for the bright idea concocted by the great men who

made YouTube. Moviemaking has never been easier or cheaper than it is today. All

you need is a good idea, and computer equipment to edit and then upload your

movie to a Web site or social networking area. Once the movie is finished and ready

to be uploaded for editing, there are many types of formats to choose form. A

popular way to create small audio and video files it to use MPEG; there are many

avenues to success. If the movie is good, funny, provocative, revealing, shocking,

and/or insightful, then there will be an audience.

Steve was on his 30th movie of the day, so he went to take a rest from that. The next

day he saw that all his movies were deleted from his computer. So he went up to

4
Karim and said, “Hey Karim, you know what happened to those movies that I made

yesterday?” Karim says, “Naww, I haven’t touched them at all,” in a suspicious

way. After Steve was talking to Karim, trying to figure out what happened; he went

to Chad and said, “Chad! What happened to my movies?” Chad started to explain

himself as Steve rudely cut him of saying, “No! I don’t want to hear it! I want to

know where my movie is!” So he didn’t say anything. He asked him again, “Where

are my movies?” He finally shrugged his shoulders saying, “I don’t know.” Now, he

finally leaves it alone and starts over. So he had an idea; he’s going to build a

camera into his computer. He was done with that, so he works on his third movie;

he decided to stop there. He went and took a fake nap, and the other friends pulled a

prank. “Hey, Chad?” Karim said. Let’s do it again. So, they are at his computer and

Steve see’s them. So as they are deleting the second movie, he comes in and see them

and say’s “I knew it, stay off my computer!”
