1. What are some ethical questions or concerns raised in this case?

Some ethical questions and concerns surrounding gene therapy would be:

(1) Even for this kind of disease, is it ethical to let a child remain in isolation, to live in a
series of plastic enclosures for the rest of his/her life just to keep them alive?

(2) For a treatment that had a rocky start as it caused some negative consequences
before and would not guarantee the safety of the patient, was it ethical to let the
children go through such trials?

(3) How will they now cure SCID in a substantial way, knowing that some patients also
died in the process?

(4) Because of the high costs of the gene therapy treatment, won’t that make it available
only to the poor but only to the wealthy?

2. Who are the stakeholders in this situation? Who are affected by the decisions made?

One of the stakeholders in this situation are of course the children’s parents, as they
would be the main ones to decide if they would allow their child to push through with
taking the risk or not. Another are the Doctors or Specialists, whose hands have been
entrusted with the life of the child, to successfully treat him/her and in which clearly, the
children who has the disease, are the ones that’ll be affected by this.
