SECTION A
• Write an essay on one of the following topics.
• Your essay should be between 200 and 250 words in length.
• Do not repeat the guidelines. That means: do not rewrite the introduction to the
question.

1 The school gate


Write a story that starts with, “One day while I was standing at the school gate…”

2 Unwelcome news
Write about an occasion when you had a telephone (or cellphone) call giving you unwelcome
news.
Remember to include your thoughts and feelings.

3 Famous sports star


Write a short story about the day a famous sports star visited your school.
Remember to develop the setting, characters and plot.

4 Cellphones
A learner said, “I just cannot stay away from my cellphone. I have it with me day and
night.”
Give your views on the advantages and disadvantages of cellphones. Remember to include
the responsible use of cellphones by learners.

5 Success
The media (television, newspapers, magazines, etc.) give young people the idea that
success comes easily.

6 New technology
Reading books on a screen will never replace the good old-fashioned paperback.

SECTION B
• Answer one question from this section.
• The content should be between 150 and 180 words in length.
• Do not rewrite the introduction to the question.

1 Friendly letter
You and your friend had to visit another friend in hospital.
Write a letter to your friend in which you apologise for not going with him/her.

2 Formal letter
The shack/house of a community member burnt down. The whole community was deeply
affected by this sad event.

Write a letter to the mayor in which you and your classmates−


• offer some assistance to help the family, and
• suggest ways how to prevent similar incidents.

3 Report
You attended the launch of a big project in the area where you live. Write a report for your
school’s newsletter in which you use the ideas below to report on the project.

• What the project was about


• Who started/launched the project
• Where it was held and who attended
• How the community will benefit from the project

4 Review
You have read a very interesting book. Use the ideas below to write a review on the
book:

• the type of book


• the main message/theme
• why you will recommend it to your friends
