The Golden Egg

Good morning honourable judges, teachers and friends. Today, I

would like to tell a story entitled “The Golden Egg”.

Once upon a time, there lived a poor farmer in a village with his

wife. One evening, he caught a hen. As he was about to kill the hen, it

squeaked, ‘Please do not kill me! I will help you.’ The farmer stopped. He

was surprised that the hen spoked.

“I will lay a golden egg everyday for you,” said the hen.

The farmer said, ‘’A golden egg? But, why should I believe you?”.

“If I do not lay a golden egg tomorrow, you can kill me,” said the

hen.

The next morning, he found a golden egg. “It is true! You really

can lay a golden egg!” He was so happy and surprised. The farmer went

to the town and sold the golden egg for a good price. From that day

onwards, the hen would lay a golden egg everyday. The farmer became

rich. But, he became greedy.

One day, while the farmer and his wife were talking, a very

wicked idea came to the farmer’s mind. “If I cut open the hen’s

stomach, I can get out all the golden eggs at once. I do not have to wait
for the hen to lay the golden eggs one by one. Then, we could be richer

faster.”

‘’’You are right,’ said his wife. The next day, the farmer killed the

hen. But to his dismay, he found no golden eggs. “Oh!! What have I

done? My greed had made me kill the hen,” he wailed. But, it was too

late. Now, the farmer and his wife had lost the hen and they would

never get any golden eggs again.

From this story, we learn that too much greed always lead to

great loss.

Thank you.
