Our introductory class was a nervous one where ninety per cent of the class were strangers, Mrs
Williamson introduced herself to the class along with her expectations, and she then asked us to
introduce ourselves to the remainder of the class. She then introduces the topic psychology and
did a few explanations with some thinkers, after that she introduces William Wundt as the father
of psychology along with some definitions, we learned about their thoughts and beliefs, and the
persons who did additional researches on psychology.

Our first presentation for this course was on behaviourism by John Watson. This assignment was
given to us on January 24, 2019. He iterated that one should not be too concerned with thought,
introspection and cognition or any other forms of internal consciousness. In his mind, it was
foolish to try and interpret the inner mind of individuals and believed that psychologist should
concern themselves with only what they could see. His research on behaviourism was to
understand how certain behaviours develop as a consequence of conditioning. This explains the
concept that you can be assessed by your behaviour.

This day we had an introduction to Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development; it stated that
children move through four different stages of their mental development. These stages are;
sensorimotor which the child is between birth and two years of age where the infant basically
relies on senses or instinct, where it focuses on sucking, grasping and looking and that object
permanence is when object still exist in the minds of children even though it cannot be seen. The
next stage is the preoperational stage which the child is between two and seven years of age and
the child begins to think symbolic. The third stage is concrete where the child is between seven
and eleven years of age, the child starts to think logically and thoughts become more organized.
The final stage is the formal stage that exists from the child is twelve years and older, at this
stage, the adolescent or young adult begins to think abstractly and reason about hypothetical
problems. This was also well acknowledged.

On February 14, 2019, we were asked to write a poem, song or conduct a role play by
choosing from a set of topics that were given to us by Mrs Linda Williamson. I choose a topic
that I was very comfortable with and this topic was “Confusion”.
Confusion
As I started to think about the girl in my class that I loved and yearned for so much and
dreamt of her becoming my wife, I started to think “when will I ever get the opportunity to get
close to her, kiss her and share my affection.” Surprisingly, there she was coming towards me in
a dress that seemed wedding-like; we held hands together and went to my home. My Parents
weren’t home so we started engaging. A few minutes later I was so happy then I heard a
pounding on the door, so I jumped up, just to realize I was just dreaming, I was wet in places no
one would expect, that started to think what was really happening to me.

On February 21, 2019, the B.Ed. group was doing a presentation on some psychologist,
namely Piaget. We were placed in groups to discuss particular topics example Piaget’s stages of
development along with the different headings that came under them. Persons were to discuss
these topics and explain them then split up and form new groups. After these new groups were
formed, we were required to explain our ideas and knowledge to our new group members from
which we would be questioned by our lecturer individually. It was a short time to remember all
that information but they were assignments that we were supposed to read up on. The process
was known as Jig-Saw.

February 28, 2019 was another interesting day in developmental psychology class where
our main topic was adulthood. We learned about the three (3) main stages of adulthood and how
individuals act and behave through these stages of development. She teaches so well and shared
life experiences which we use as a method of learning and we can relate to these situations, it
also gives us an idea of what you should have possessed at these stages and the negative impact
that these have if you fail to acquire these achievements at the various stages of development.
The class was very informative and all of the class participated and made their contribution to the
education of others. She expressed how the class was mature and she liked us and this helps to
motivate us, her question techniques were excellent and she ensures that most, if not all of the
class have to make their contribution by getting involved.

March 7, 2019 we were exposed to nature/ nurture, longitudinal and cross-sectional. These are
research methods that are used in psychology and the different types of researches which are
qualitative and quantitative which deals with quality research and the amount respectively,
however; the three main types of researches that are used in psychology are ;descriptive research,
relational/ co-relational research and experimental research. These were the main topics that we
were assigned with child development. At the end of the class, an assignment was given to
explain the ethical issues in psychological research which was done and we were tested on them
the following week, which from my perspective, I was forced to learn all nine of them which was
a great thought.

This class and presentation was about Erik Erikson and Sigmund Freud and the psycho-social
stages of human development. The psychosexual stages are Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and
Genital stages, it was explained what children experience at these stage of their development and
the different sensation that they experience that they have to go through. She also explained how
adults respond to these behaviours and try to curtail their actions, it is important that we
understand what is happening to them through the various stages of their development so we can
better understand their reasons for their actions, so this will prevent us from abusing them, and
also helps to support and motivate them.

This morning school get even more interesting where the lecturer wanted to do a personality test
on us to find out what kind of person were are, but there wasn’t sufficient time to execute this
test. So we went on to do the humanistic theory, so she went on to do Maslow’s hierarch of
needs, it was explained that the basic needs has to be addressed in order for one to move on to
the other stage. The pyramid was a design that was used to express the different levels and
explained how one matriculated into the other. I got to understand the reasons why persons
behave a particular way when they are in dire needs. In order for one to be effective and fully
functional, the basic social needs must be met.

Piaget’s was the head of discussion where development is concerned; it was expressed about the
declining of the retention of information and the reduce attention span. She also explained the
processing of information in elderly person is much more slower that younger persons and this is
one main reason why younger persons learner quicker and easier, with this, she said that we
should encourage adolescence and young adults for study from an early stage and get qualified
instead of waiting for older age when things become more difficult. The consideration of older
ones working and going to school must be seriously considered as it can or may impact on the
individual negatively. The three stages of adulthood must be seriously considered as the older
you get, the weaker you get, the slower your reaction time will be and this will affect your
learning capability.
