Foundations of education
Assess the ideology of Jamaica as a nation and show how this ideology contributes to the
formation of the education system

for non-epistemic reasons. These rely on basic assumptions about reality.
INDEPENDENCE ERA
Between 1960 and 1980 Jamaica was governed by, firstly a largely capitalistic government then,
a socialistic government. Under the original independent government from 1962 through to
1972), educational, economic, and social institutions were organized largely along capitalistic
lines. Then there was a change to a self-identified socialist government came (1972-1980), most
of these same institutions were rearranged along largely socialistic lines.
The Attack
Michael Manley, with the support of the People's National Party (P.N.P.) levelled several attacks
on the economic and most of all the educational arrangements of previous Jamaican
governments. These attacks, based as they were in the socialistic ideology, argued that: 1
education as practiced in Jamaica lacked relevance to the needs of the society and the individual
and was practiced in an authoritarian atmosphere, secondly; it was geared toward reproducing
the class system in the society and maintaining a superior approach.
