TYPES OF POWER PLANT
There are several different types of power plants used across the world today. Power plants
are classified into different groups based on the criteria used for the classification. Using the
criteria of the source of energy for electricity production, we can broadly classify power
plants to:
1. CONVENTIONAL POWER PLANTS
They include the generation of electricity from conventional sources of energy. These
resources are finite and exhaustible. Once consumed, these sources cannot be replaced
2
by others. Examples include coal, timber, petroleum, lignite, natural gas, fossil fuels,
nuclear fuels etc.
The conventional power plants include the following power plants:
Steam Engines Power Plants - consists of a heat source for generating steam,
a turbine or steam engine with a generator, and a cooling device for
condensing the exhaust steam.
Steam Turbine Power Plants - a turbine in which a high-velocity jet of
steam rotates a bladed disc or drum. It extracts thermal energy from
pressurized steam and uses it to do mechanical work on a rotating output shaft.
Gas Turbine Power Plants - the engine at the heart of the power plant that
produces electric current. A gas turbine is a combustion engine that can
convert natural gas or other liquid fuels to mechanical energy.
This energy then drives a generator that produces electrical energy.
Diesel Power Plants - an electrical installation equipped with one or several
electric current generators driven by diesel engines.
Hydro Electric Power Plants - usually located in dams that impound rivers,
thereby raising the level of the water behind the dam and creating as high a
head as is feasible.
Nuclear Power Plants - A nuclear power plant is a thermal power station in
which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. For instance, U-235 is fissile
which means that it is easily split and gives off a lot of energy making it ideal
for nuclear energy.
2. NON-CONVENTIONAL POWER PLANTS
The non-conventional sources of energy are being continuously produced in nature
and are not exhaustible. Examples include wood, geothermal energy, wind energy,
tidal energy, nuclear fusion, biomass, solar energy etc.
The following are the power plants from non-conventional sources of energy.
Thermoelectric Generator
Thermionic generator
Fuel-cells Power Plants
Photovoltaic solar cells Power System

QUESTION : 2
OVERALL REQUIREMENT OF ENNERGY IN PAKISTAN, THEN IN KARACHI
ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN PAKISTAN
The most important measure in the energy balance of Pakistan is the total consumption of
92.33 billion kWh of electric energy per year. Per capita this is an average of 426 kWh.
Pakistan can provide itself completely with self-produced energy. The total production of all
electric energy producing facilities is 110 bn kWh, also 119% of own requirements. The rest
of the self-produced energy is either exported into other countries or unused. Along with pure
consumptions the production, imports and exports play an important role. Other energy
sources such as natural gas or crude oil are also used.
The overall requirement of energy (electricity) in Pakistan is 24000 MW. The Distribution
Company (DISCO) produces electricity as follows:
DISCO PEAK DEMAND
Iesco 1861 MW 1898 MW
GEPCO 1773 MW 1850 MW
PESCO 2852 MW 2182 MW
FESCO 2227 MW 2200 MW
TESCO 185 MW 170 MW
LESCO 3807 MW 3747 MW
MEPCO 2861 MW 3150 MW
SEPCO 1224 MW 800 MW
HESCO 1028 MW 950 MW
QESCO 1127 MW 900 MW
The overall requirement of energy in Karachi is 3200 MW while the supply is of 2900 MW

QUESTION : 3
DEMAND, SUPPLY AND SHORTFALL OF ENERGY SUPPLY IN KARACHI AND
PAKISTAN
DEMAND, SUPPLY AND SHORTFALL IN PAKISTAN
The overall power demand on June 25, 2019 was assessed to be 23,055MW capered to
electricity generated of 22,700MW showing a merge shortfall of
Transmission & Distribution Consumer Demand 22,055
Short fall 355MW
Capacity 22,700MW MW
DEMAND, SUPPLY AND SHORTFALL IN KARACHI
Karachi produces about 2267 MW of electricity against the demand of 3500 MW, leaving the
gap of 1233MW. This shortage is removed by power purchase agreements giving about 1152
MW, forcing the government to cut power between 4 to 8 hr. to manage the demand.
