Recreational activities are activities of leisure done for pleasure or


to relax

a) Picnics

A picnic is a trip/ an outing to the country, seaside, forests which


people bring food

b) Resting

Stopping work or movement in order to relax, sleep or recover


strength.

its an act of going to see and spend time with someone.

d) Reading for pleasure

this is free reading for fun without being assigned

e) Swimming

Swimming is moving through or in water by moving arms, legs, fins


and tails

Recreation festivals and holidays

Importances of recreation

1. Recreation activities improve our physical health such as

walking, hiking, swimming etc. Through exercise.

2. Through recreation activities we learn different things like

singing, writing stories etc.

3. Recreation activities help us to have fun

4. We are able to watch entertainment and different sports

games

5. We are able to visit and make new friends

6. Recreation helps us to build communication skills and team

building. As children, we have to work in groups to solve

problems and participate in different games

Recreation, festivals and holidays

Festivals

A festival is an event celebrated by a community according to a


belief or a custom

Festivals in Uganda

1. The festival of the Uganda matyrs

Every 3rd June, there is a festival to celebrate in Uganda as all


the nation come together to remember the Uganda martyrs who
were killed by the Kabaka of Buganda.

2. The Nile festival

This festival lasts for a week in the month of August in Jinja. It


is an exhibition of art and craft cultural tradition of Uganda.

3. This is Uganda

Every December thousands of people gather at Kyadondo rugby club


in Kampala to see the diversity of culture in Uganda through art,
music and poetry

4. International film, music and art festival of Bayimba

This is a 3 day festival which takes place in the national theatre


of Uganda. It aims at the art and culture of Uganda and is a must
see for all visitors who want to learn more about the music and art
scene of the country

5. Circumcision

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin covering tip of the


male private part. This is commonly practiced in Eastern Uganda by
the Bagisu and the moslems.

6. Heroes’ day

This is celebrated every 9th June as the country commemorates the


heroes.

7. Independence Day

Uganda remembers the day it got independence every year. The


celebrations always take place on the 9th of October

8. Child naming festival

In some parts of Uganda, a naming festival is done when a family


gives birth to special children for example twins, empaako etc.

Nakato and Babirye, Kato and Wasswa are twins’ names for
Baganda

Ochieng and Opio, Apio and Achieng for Luo

Isingoma, Kato, Nyangoma and Nyakato for Banyankole and Bakiga,

Batooro and Banyoro give names like Akiiki, Amooti these names
are called ‘Empaako’.

Holidays

A holiday is a day of festivals or recreation when no wort is done

Or

It is a day free from work

Types of holidays.

School holidays

These are days when school children do not attend school e.g. The
first term holidays

National and public holidays

This is a holiday established by the government (law) and it is


usually a non-working, non-school day e.g. Martyrs day, heroes
day, independence day.

Religious holidays

These are days where different religions come together to


celebrate their beliefs
