The Importance of Recycling.
Assalamualaikum and a very pleasant morning to the honourable judges, the ever punctual
time keeper, respected teachers and my fellow friends. Today, on this fine day, I would like
to share with you my speech about the importance of recycling.
Have you ever thought about how much garbage you produce every day?
The Malay Mail reported that Malaysians have been generating over 200,000 tonnes in
household waste nearly every month since the start of the first movement control order
(MCO) in March last year. So, just imagine what it means. As a human, every one of us have
been contributing in the pollution of our planet in different ways, but it is not too late to do
something and help. One easy way to do it could be, recycling.
Recycling is important in today’s world if we want to leave this planet for our future
generations. It is good for the environment since we are making new products from the old
products which are of no use to us.
Ladies and gentleman,
We need drastically improve our recycling habits - at home, in schools and at workplaces.
Here are some incredible benefits behind the push to get everyone to recycle more of their
waste.
Recycling reduces the size of our landfills
One of the biggest reasons why recycling has been promoted is that it does reduce the strain
on our environment. By utilizing waste products in a constructive way, we can slowly
decrease the size of our landfills. As the population grows, it will become difficult for the
landfills to hold so much trash. When this happens, our cities and beautiful landscapes will
face pollution, poisoning and many health problems. The benefits of recycling are that it
helps to keep the pollution in check and decrease it little by little.
At the same time, when we practise recycling, we can conserve our natural resources.
When we recycle, used materials are converted into new products. This will definitely reduce
the need to consume natural resources. If used materials are not recycled, new products are
made by extracting fresh raw material from the Earth, through mining and forestry. Recycling
paper and wood saves trees and forests. Yes, you can plant new trees, but you can’t replace
virgin rainforest or ancient woodlands once they’re lost. Meanwhile, recycling plastic means
creating less new plastic which is definitely a good thing, especially as it’s usually made from
fossil fuel hydrocarbons. The more we recycle, the more we protect our resources!
Ladies and gentleman,
We can also save a lot of energy once we recycle.
Making products from recycled materials requires less energy than making them from new
materials. For example, producing new aluminium from old products uses 95% less energy
than making it from scratch. Making paper from pulped recycled paper uses 40% less energy
than making it from virgin wood fibres.
Last but not least, recycling helps you save money.
You can sell recyclable materials to organizations that are willing to buy it. Using products
that are recycled lowers expenses. Products that are made from recycled materials are less
expensive than products made from fresh materials.
Ladies and gentleman.
In conclusion, recycling is a lifestyle change that requires discipline and repetition. It is
essential that we take some steps all by ourselves without being dependent on anybody else.
Everyone needs to do their bit in making recycling a success. I encourage all of you to start
recycling and make the difference, let’s start today. No matter how small you start, you can
make a great change to our Earth. That’s all, thank you.
