Lesson 1 T A Glimpse to the Study and Appreciation of Literature

Hello dear ICEan, good day! This is teacher Mark Hortaleza, your teacher in the subject 21 st Century
Literature from the Philippines and the World. This subject will take us to the world of appreciation
and critical study of the 21st century literature- ITS genres, elements, structures, context, and various
dimension.
Our focus is on understanding, appreciation, and application of the techniques of appreciating,
evaluating, and writing literary texts.
Please refer to your module and write down important notes as you watch this video. Let us begin!
Your objective in this lesson is to understand literature and its standards.
What are the possible reasons why people read poems or stories? Cite examples.
In your subject creative writing, perhaps you have already an idea on what literature is. As a review,
literature is derived from the Latin word “litera,” which means letters. And, in a particular French
phrase, it means “beautiful writing.”
What does this statement mean? “Literature is a product of a creative mind.” Explain.
One of the most notable definitions of literature is that it is a product of life and about life. For a wider
understanding of what literature is, please do examine the details on page 3 of your module.
To further understand literature, please answer the activity in your module on page 3. Just complete the
statements indicated there.
As we learn more, please bear in mind that there are standards of literature. As a student, we must be
familiar with these standards to understand and evaluate various literary pieces.
Literature must have universality. Meaning, it must appeal to all. It must be sensible, and may be
understood by people because it deals with universal condition. For example, a poem about nature can
be said universal. Same is true with a short story about being generous.
Next, it must have suggestiveness, meaning, what you read will suggest a deeper message beyond what
is written. Example, there are lines in a poem or story that suggest a particular subject like being
honest, being concerned about nature, and many other.
Then it must have style. Of course, when you write a poem, for example, you must apply the elements
such as the use of figure of speech, rhythm, rhyme, or diction.
Another, we have spiritual value. It means a literature must evoke our spirit towards the physical world.
If we read about being kind and thoughtful to people, then we eventually must carry out such value
with us.
There should also be permanence, intellectual beauty, and artistry in literature. A writer may use his or
her imagination to create a world of beauty, discover, and meaning.
What makes literature an art? Explain.
Okay. Please familiarize the meaning and standards of literature as we move forward to various literary
text. Always apply what you learn. Remember that this subject will guide you as you develop both your
creativity and linguistic ability in writing and understanding.
That’s all for this lesson. Remember that a motivated learner is always an ideal learner. See you in the
next learning activities. Good bye!
21st Century Lit. Lesson 1 A Forms and Genres of Literature
Hello dear ICEan, good day! In this video, we will learn about the different forms and genres of
literature. We have learned in our previous lesson what literature is. We have known that there are
standards of literature. Now, we will have a deeper understanding of the forms and genres of literature.
Please refer to your module and do not forget to jot down important notes as you watch this video.
Your objective in this lesson is to identify and differentiate the main genres and sub-genres of
literature.
As we read and learn about various literary texts, we must first be familiar with the main genres.
What are the two main genres of literature? Explain each briefly. (5 points)
When you read about story of facts and real events, you read a nonfiction text. On the other hand, when
you read a poem, short story, or any literary piece that is based on imagination and unreality or fantasy,
you read a fictional literature.
Provide 5 examples of literary texts that fall on each of the main genres of literature. Have this as your
guide. (5 points)
There are what we call subgenres of nonfiction.
First, we have narrative nonfiction. It pertains to the story told based on facts.
And we have essays. This is a nonfictional writing piece that presents the author’s personal view of a
particular subject or theme. Example is when you write an essay about how you deal with online class
amidst pandemic. Of course, you will write mainly based on facts and real-life experiences.
Another is the biography and autobiography. These are a composition or historical account of the
events of a person’s life, generally, the significant experiences.
What is the difference between biography and autobiography? Explain. (5 points)
And lastly, we have speech. This refers to the oral communication with an ability to express one’s
thoughts, feelings, or emotions.
As a literary student, why do we need to understand the different genres of nonfiction? Explain. (4
points)
Okay, now we have the genres of fiction. We know that there are different types of fiction such as
poem, short stories, drama, and others. We have fables. These are short narratives with animals as the
characters suggesting a useful truth about life. Then we have fairy tales or stories about magical
creatures that are written mainly for children.
During the past decade, why is storytelling before bedtime a common practice of parents for their
children? Prove your point. (3 points)
If we are going to understand a literary text, particularly a fictional text, we must be familiar with the
different genres such as fantasy, short story, mythology, and many others. Knowing the nature of a
literary text will guide us to understand and appreciate what it expresses.
Please study further the different subgenres of literature specified in your module on pages 4 and 5.
Okay. To apply what we have learned, what is the common thing among the different genres and
subgenres of literature? Explain and cite examples. (3 points)
That’s all for this lesson. I hope you have learned a lot and you will apply what you learn. Always bear
in mind the objectives of each lesson.
Remember that a motivated learner is always an ideal learner.
See you in the next learning activity. Goodbye!
