CELTIC BRITAIN

About a thousand years before Crist the celts spread a cross Europe. They spoke a common language the
religion is druidism.

The romans invasion

The romans conquered the island under emperor claudius, they built a wall to dfend the province of
britannia under emperor andrian. Andrian’s wall runs from cost to cost marking the frontier of the roman
empire. The romans brought their language and christianity.

End of the roman occupation.

New invaders now arrived from across the north sea. These were germani c tribes of angles, saxons and
jutes, who spoke dialects of a language we now call old english.

Anglo saxon was divided into 7 kingdoms. In the eight century viking raiders attacked the monastery of
lindisfarne and many monasteries were destroyed. The remaning monks fled to kells in ireland with a
gospel book, know as the book of keels.

As the vikings prepared large armies ready to conquer the whole island, king alfred united the anglo saxon
people against the danes.

The last invasion

Harold, the last anglo saxon king defeated the vikings. William the conquerer duke of normandy, defeated
the anglo-saxons at the battel of hastings. Harold was killed and the anglo saxon reign came to an end.

William the conqueror

William duke of normandy was crowned king on christmas day. The normans introduced the feudal system
and built castles to defend their conquest. They also brought their language, norman french. Latin and
normand french were now the languages of church and government.

Henry 2

The throne passed to henry plantagenet the son of henry 1’s. henry 2 is also rembered for his quarrel with
thomas becket, the archbishop of canterburry. Henry is responsable for becket’s murder in canterbury
cathedral on twentynine december.

Henry was succeeded by his son richard. Onthe death of richard jhon became king. Angered by
jhon’soppressive reign the barons rebelled against their king. They forced the king to sign the magna carta.
This important document establishid under the rule of law for all men.

The hundred years war with france began in 1337, seeking to regain lost territories in france. The war did
not go on continuousy, english won important victories.

The war of roses

After wars england was torn by the quarrelling over the crown between two branches of the plantaginit
royal family, the house of york and the house of lancasterr. This thirteen years dainastic struggle was know
as the war of roses, because the withe rose was the symbol of the house of york and the red rose the
symbol of the house of lancaster. When henry tudor of lancaster defeated the last of the york kings,
