Maintaining Elevator Brushes

Using the wrong brush grade on a slip ring or commutator are some of many issues that negatively affect carbon brush
functionality. These mechanical issues can be diagnosed and fixed with a brush survey.

Brush surveys are important to ensure your carbon brushes are in good working order, and to maintain the overall
health of your electric motor or generator. Renown Electric provides brush survey field services to analyze and trouble-
shoot motor problems, and to repair equipment before serious problems can occur.

During our survey, we make sure the ring or commutator provides the right amount of friction, is defect-free and
properly chamfered, and has a run-out within acceptable limits, as Figure 1 illustrates. Renown also carefull checks that
all electrical conditions are properly adjusted to the correct levels, as Figure 2 shows.
