English is known to be the universal language, and it is commonly used among foreign-language
speakers for the to be understood. However, it is also known to have different varieties, and it differs from
one country to another. Although each variety might seem similar, it will always have a significant
difference when you look at it thoroughly. Just like the Philippine English or also called "Pinoy English."
According to Mikey Bustos (2012), the Philippines is considered the second-best English-speaking country
in Asia next to India. It is one reason why most Filipinos are successful in North America or other English-
speaking countries.
Filipinos are great speakers of the English language. However, the Philippine English features can
be a barrier in communicating English from a different country using various varieties. This can be because
some Filipinos pronounce English words quite differently, or sometimes it is because of the Filipino accent.
It can also be the difference in using different terms or phrases that can cause misunderstandings because
it has different meanings to other varieties.
I use English as the language where I comfortably express myself, whether formally or informally.
It is much easier for me to express my feelings using this, and to be honest, it is more convenient for me
to use the English language rather than our language, Filipino. Since grade school, we are taught how to
use the English language much more than using the Filipino language. Others consider English as a basis
for intelligence, and this is why I was pressured, as a child, to learn English for the better foundation of
my early education. This left me with a mindset that it is necessary to be good in English. Living in the
Philippines, I can truthfully testify that English is used differently in the country. We, Filipinos, have
developed our own way of communication using the English language, and it is called the Philippine
English. Nowadays, it is claimed that Philippine English is our own language because it is already used
widely in the country.
Filipinos tend to be tied up with western standards, which is also why they think it is the normal
standard. Where in reality, they are not the ones that needed to be looked up. This mentality is mostly
because of the colonization of Spain and other Western countries. Developing a sense of pride for
Philippine English can be through acceptance. Let us accept the fact that not all English is the same. We
should not be ashamed of the variety of English we grew up with. Others may make fun of our accents
and degrade our comprehensions, always remember that we have something on our own that they would
not understand. This is because the English language is broad, and it does not exist in one place as the
same. Never be ashamed and always be proud that we are Filipinos.
