B. Explain the keywords
a. The phrase “according to the riches” (3:16)
i. It is a word that must do giving out of His abundance.
ii. If you have a lot and you give a lot, we are giving according to what we have
(offering, 1 Cor. 6).
iii. God has given out of the abundance of His Glory (Ps. 85)
b. Bearing with one another in love (4:2)
i. It means to bear and carry one another’s character
c. We must be together in one body (2:15-16)
i. Even when we were enemies, God made us alive together with Christ, through
baptism (resurrection).
ii. He raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places.
C. Explain the key phrases
a. We are currently right now seated together with Christ in the heavenly places, and why
so? That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace.
b. “In Christ”
i. we can also say “in the Church
ii. Rom. 6, Gal. 3:26-28, Col. 2:12, “in baptism”
iii. Acts 2, we are wash in the blood of Jesus and God add us to the Church, when we
obey.
iv. 1 Cor. 6:11, we are washed, sanctified, and justified through Christ.
v. The goal is not baptism but to be in Christ.
c. “In the heavenly places”
i. Eph. 1:20, 2:6, 3:10, 6:12 we found this phrase
ii. Paul uses this phrase to describe the “spiritual realm”
iii. That in which Christians interests (Col. 1:3) are based and from which blessings
flow (Eph. 1:20).
D. The spiritual blessings (Eph. 1:3-14)
a. Election and adoption (1:4-5)
i. God chose us (saints)
ii. Location: in Him (Christ)
iii. Time: before the foundation of the world
iv. Purpose: So that we should be holy and blameless before him.
v. Motive: In love He (God) predestined us for adoption
b. Adoption (Eph. 1:5)
i. God’s glorious grace is praise in the fact that God has chosen us, and adopt us to
receive all blessings through Christ (Eph. 1:6, 2:4-6)
c. Redemption (1:7-8)
i. The word “redemption” means to “buy back.” As the redeemer does in the O.T.
1. Something once possessed is lost (Rom. 6:23)
a. We were lost in our sins and trespasses (Eph. 2:1)
2. A priced must be paid (Heb. 9:22)
a. 1 Pet. 1:18-19, the blood of Christ, Eph. 1:14, 1 Cor. 6:19-20
3. A power must be broken
a. The power of the Devil (Mark 3:27)
b. 1 Cor. 15:55-57, Paul asks the question about death, and the victory
of death? Because in Jesus we have broken the chains of death and
sin.
d. Inheritance (1:9-12)
i. “Having” is a continuous thought from Eph. 1:7-8. How do we know the
abundance of His grace? Through making us known the “mystery of His will”
ii. The word mystery refers to what has hidden away in the mind of God from
eternity.
1. The only thing we can know is what God choses to reveal to us. And He
has done
iii. In Eph. 1:10, is the result of God’s purpose. Salvation through Christ Jesus.
1. The word “οἰκονομία” represents the administration of God’s mystery
(Gospel) to at the end unite in Him.
iv. In Eph. 1:10, Paul was not describing things in the future, but what God has
already done for us, and is currently on existence. God made everything possible
through Christ.
v. In Eph. 1:10, Paul uses an image of completeness (Heaven and earth).
e. The inheritance (1:11-13a)
i. Inheritance, for us is Salvation through Christ
E. Thesis passage and why? Is that
a. The purpose statement of the book is that Christ would unite the Jew and Gentile in the
Church.
i. By showing the blessings that we have in Christ, and the grace we have been
shown, God has united us in one body through Christ.
F. Other studies
a. The purpose of the mystery (3:6)
i. Everything was possible through the cross (2:16)
ii. This will happen through the obedience to the Gospel (Gal. 3:26-29).
b. Faith has 3 components
i. It accepts

iii. It obeys what God says
c. By faith you have been saved
i. The bible does not say we can be saved by grace ALONE or faith ALONE
1. Everyone would be saved (Titus 2:12)
2. James tells us the demons believe (James 2)
ii. We are saved because God plays a role and we play a role. Obedience and grace
are not mutually exclusive entities (they can coexist).
iii. The idea Paul wants to make is that we did not earn it. Paul already talked about
the need we had and what God had done (2:1-7).
iv. God’s grace appeared to us through His son (Titus 2:10-12). But that does not
mean everyone is saved.
d. Not a result of works (2:9)
i. The Bible talks about “works of obedience”
1. 1 Cor. 15:10, Paul talks about himself
2. 1 Tim. 1:12-13, Paul talks about himself
3. Paul ascribes his salvation to the grace of God (Acts 9, 22). He was faced
by the LORD and then he was baptized.
4. How can a person be saved, without having their sins washed away?
5. Paul cannot say we can be saved ONLY by grace because he would be
contradicting himself in Acts 22.
G. Why cannot you go to heaven without being in the body of Christ?
