CHECKING NORMAL FUNCTIONS OF SERVER
Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
       1. Check normal functions of server
       2. Determine the functions of a computer server
       3. Appreciate the uses of a server
Introduction
A network can be very large, called a WAN (Wide Area Network)
spanning the globe, or very small as in a home or small office environment.
The Internet is the largest WAN, and it depends on servers to provide
connectivity and other services as well as access to shared information and
applications. There are many types, categories and functions of a server, but
they are always a component of a network, and networks always have at least
one client and one server.
What is a normal function of a server?
SERVER is a computer used in a network and which provides a service
to a client. Servers usually have more processing power, memory and
storage than client computers. The client is the computer that is not acting
as the server, at least at that point in time, and is requesting information or a
service from the server. Understanding what a server is involves an
understanding of what networks are. When computers are connected in
some physical (or wireless) way and sharing services or information, this is
referred to as a computer network. In a computer network, there are two or
more participants where at least one of them is acting as a client and one is
acting as the server.
The origin of the server is to serve – technically means that the
specific computer is serving all those computers that are present in its
network. It facilitates them by making queue of the printing command of
several computers at a time and also acts like a file server for those
applications that are accessed by the online terminals.
The function of a computer server is to store, retrieve and send
computer files and data to other computers on a network.
Network servers have many functions and can form an important part of
your computer network.
Active Directory provides the structure to centralize the network and
store information about network resources across the entire domain.
Active Directory uses Domain Controllers to keep this centralized storage
available to network users.
Here are the steps on Active Directory Domain Services setup and
configuration of a new Domain Controller.
DCPromo (Domain Controller Promoter) is a tool in Active Directory that
installs and removes Active Directory Domain Services and promotes domain
controllers.
Beginning in Windows Server 2008,Active Directory Domain Services role
had to be installed prior to running DCPromo, but it still needed to run to
make the server a DC.
1. Log into your Windows Server and start the Server manager
2. Navigate to the Server Roles tab and press on the “Add Roles” button.
3. The Add Roles Wizard is going to open up, click Next.
4. The Wizard will display a list of Roles. Choose the Active Directory
Domain Services Role.
5. The Active Directory Domain Services Role requires adding features to
the server. Click on “Add required features” on the appearing screen and
then click on next.
6. on the following screen click on Install and wait for the installation to
finish. When the installation finishes click on Close.
7. At this point the Active Directory Domain Services are not configured
yet.
8. If we click on Active Directory Domain Services button we get to the
following screen. Our next step will be configuring Active Directory
Domain Services using dcpromo.exe.
9. We are about to start the Active Directory Domain Services
installation Wizard.
10. Navigate to the following screen. Choose the “Create a new domain in a
new forest option”and click on next button.
11. Type in your Domain name.
12. Choose the oldest operating system in your network. This option exists for
backwards compatibility of different features.
13. If your Domain Controller is a stand-alone server you don’t have to choose
the DNS server option. If otherwise, it’s recommended to leave it checked.
14. Specify the folders that will contain the Active Directory controller
database, log files. And SYSVOL and click on Next.
15. Choose a password for Restore mode Administrator account. (This is not
the Domain Administrator account, this is an additional account used for
recovery)
16. When the wizard finishes configuring the settings reboot your server.
17. After rebooting when you first log on the server is not going to accept your
machine Administrator account.
18. In order to solve this issue you need to choose the “Switch User” button
and login with your Domain Administrator account which is basically the
same user account and password but now it belongs to a domain the domain
name is needed. For example: PPSP2010\Administrator.
Self- Check 3.2-1
A. Enumeration: Enumerate the different normal functions of a server.
  1.
  2.
  3.
  4.
  5.
B. Essay
  1. Can you run dcpromo without installing Active directory first? Explain
     your answer for 5 points.
  2. Why do we need to run DCpromo and install Active Directory when we
can already access the network via peer to peer? (5 points)
Answer Key 3.2-1
  A.
  1. Sharing Information
  2. Storing files centrally
  3. Controlling user access
  4. Keeping software updated
  5. Managing security risks
  B. Essay
  1. Yes. Because upon running the dcpromo, the installation wizard is
telling you to install the Active Directory too, so when running
DCpromo is like installing and configuring the Active Directory at the
     same time.
  2. We need to run DCpromo and install Active Directory in order to be able
to create specific account for the client PCs, redirect folders like
Desktop, My Documents, and to centralize the network and store
information about network resources across the entire domain.
TASK SHEET 3.2-1
Title: Checking the Normal Function of Server
Performance Objective: Given the supplies and equipment, you
should be able to check normal functions of a
                      server in accordance with manufacturers’
                      instructions.
Supplies/Materials :
Equipment : Computers with router
Steps/Procedure:
1. Check on the Server Manager and look for the File Services, DHCP
and Printer Services if it is properly installed.
2. Open the Local C folder
3. Open DFRoots and then Namespace1 folder
4. Create a new folder and share
5. Redirect the folder using the Server manager
6. Log-in to your client PC and look for the folder you have created from
   your server
7. Create a new document, and then save it to the folder that was
   created from the server
8. Go back to you server, open Local C and check on the document you
have created from the client PC.
9. Check if the files saved from your client PC is synchronized on your
   Server PC.

1. DHCP enables a server to automatically assign an IP address to a
computer from a defined range of numbers configured for a given
network. In the absence of a DHCP server, each computer or other
device such as printer, on the network needs to be assigned an IP
       address.
2. We need to configure and set the scope in order to determine how
many computers are covered on your local network. For example,
configuring an IP address range of 192.168.1.50-100 to cover the 25+
PC Clients on my local network.
3. You can recover volumes, folders, files, certain applications, and the
system state through Windows Server Back-up. And, in case of
disasters like hard disk failures, you can perform a system recovery,
which will restore your complete system onto the new hard disk, by
using a full server backup and the Windows Recovery Environment.
4. Yes. Because upon running the dcpromo, the installation wizard is telling
you to install the Active Directory too, so when running DCpromo is
like installing and configuring the Active Directory at the same time.
