Research Insights for STEM Students

Research is important in daily life when making purchases like electronics. Reviews from long-term users are more accurate than professional reviews. Research is also important in education, medicine, industry, agriculture, and technology. It allows improvements in teaching methods, medical treatments, identifying growth areas, improving crop yields, and increasing the efficiency of the research process. While research itself is not a profession, it involves specialized knowledge and self-regulation. Research can be disadvantageous as it is costly, time-consuming, may have low participant engagement, produce inaccurate self-reported data, data may not be relevant or difficult to obtain. The purpose of research is to enhance society through advancing knowledge, while the goal is to produce new understanding of topics.

Answer the following questions in a clean sheet of paper.

1. How does research impact your everyday life?


 Research is fairly important in my daily life. When I’m about to buy something quite
expensive that I hope will last a long time, like a computer, I walk around the shops to see
what’s available locally, jot down the model numbers then look up the reviews on the web.
I’ve found that reviews from people who have used the products for a long time, like the
ones on Amazon and Product Review, are more accurate than professional reviewers who
use the products for only a day or two.
2. Give the importance of research in the following fields?
a. Education - Educational research improves teaching and learning methods by empowering
you with data to help you teach and lead more strategically and effectively. Educational
research helps students apply their knowledge to practical situations.
b. Nutrition/Medicine - It allows the clinicians to gain an understanding of what goes into
basic science discoveries and drug development. Translational research has an important
role to play in medical research, and when used alongside basic science will lead to
increased knowledge, discovery and treatment in medicine.
c. Industry - A lot of industries and markets are maturing, and market research can help
identify possible future growth areas, highlight potentially disruptive trends, and showcase
important product innovations and research among an industry's key competitors.
d. Agriculture - Agricultural research seems to be the oldest form of organized research in the
world. Agricultural research can be broadly defined as any research activity aimed at
improving productivity and quality of crops by their genetic improvement, better plant
protection, irrigation, storage methods, farm mechanization, efficient marketing, and a
better management of resources.
e. Technology - Technology programs and tools attempt to assist the research process and
prove that although technology increases the quantity of skills and literacies needed to
complete research, it also increases the efficiency of each step and effectiveness of the
finished product.
3. Is research a profession?
 Unlike medicine, law or engineering, research itself is generally not thought of as a
'profession' per se. Nonetheless, there is some value in thinking of research as having its
own inherent professional responsibilities. These stem from three important characteristics
of professionalism in general: specialized knowledge and skills, self-regulation, and service.
Researchers also spend much of their time working with professional colleagues both in
their field and in other settings.
4. Does research have disadvantage? Explain your answer.
- Of course, research also have certain disadvantages. I will be listing down some that I
know.
 Costly. Primary data may be very expensive in preparing and carrying out the research. The
cost can be incurred in producing the paper for questionnaires, paying staff members, or
renting equipment for an experiment.
 Time-consuming. Primary data collection requires the development and execution of a
research plan. It takes longer to undertake primary research than to acquire secondary data.
 Low Engagement. Primary research can be hard to gain volunteers to participate in primary
data collection if there are no rewards. This information may be hard to use if there are a
low number of responses.
 Inaccurate Data. Information obtained from Primary Research may not always be accurate.
This information may also describe what people think and believe but not necessarily how
they behave in real life.
 Different Purpose. Data in Research may be utilized for different grounds, making the
information irrelevant to the organization’s topic.
 Difficult to Obtain. Relevant data may become hard to find or be outdated. Some research
may even be costly to purchase or be currently non-existent.
