LESSON PLAN IN MAPEH 9
S. Y. 2016 – 2017
I. OBJECTIVES:
Within the teaching – learning period, the students are expected to:
a. Define and identify the harmful short – term and long – term effects of
substance use and abuse on the body;
b. Deliberate the harmful short – term and long – term effects of substance use
and abuse on the body on the following domains:
a.1. self
a.2. family
a.3. school
a.4. community
c. Discuss the relationship between drug use and the incidence of HIV – AIDS;
and
d. Explain the health, socio – cultural, psychological, legal, and economical
scope of substance use and abuse.
II. SUBJECT MATTER:
Short Term and Long Term Effects of Substance Use and Abuse
MAPEH Grade 9 Learner’s Module
Textbook, audio – visual materials
III. LEARNING PROCEDURE:
A. Motivation:
Let them watch a video clip showing individuals with different illnesses
(physical, mental, social, etc.).
B. INTRODUCTION:
Introduce the topic by stating the competency to work on “recognizes
warning signs of substance use and abuse and discusses the harmful short
and long terms effects of substance use and abuse on the body”.
C. LESSON PROPER:
Start the discussion by eliciting responses from the students regarding
the video they just watched. Let them realize that those found in the video
could be the harmful effects (short and long) of the substance use and abuse
on the body.
Give them illustrative examples about gateway drugs so as to give them
ideas on what gateway drugs really are.
From the responses they gave about the video, share to them that some
are short-term and others are long term. Provide concrete examples like:
Headache and light headedness – short – term effect
Damage of organs like liver, heart, colon and brain – long – term
effects
Slurred speech – short – term effects
Cancer
All the rest of the harmful short and long terms effects of every kind of
gateway drugs, its effects on the body on the following domains – self,
family, school, and community, relationship between drug use and the
incidence of HIV – AIDS, and the health, socio – cultural, psychological,
legal, and economical scope of substance use and abuse shall be discussed
through a video.
D. ACTIVITIES/EXERCISES:
Let the students think of a creative way of showing how drugs are
a burden to health, socio-cultural, psychological, legal, and economic
magnitude. They may write a poem, a song, draw a cartoon, poster, etc.
Let them share with the class their literary work.
IV. EVALUATION:
Let the students make a recommendation letter to their mayor or barangay
captain about the dangers brought by drug abuse in the community. Let them further
sight possible evidences of drug abuse like the presence of “hamog boys”, “rugby boys”,
etc. Letters are to be submitted before the period ends.
V. ASSIGNMENT:
Form the students into five groups. Each group must create an advocacy video
about drug abuse and its effect on the body. They can use video camera recorders,
tablets or their cell phone camera. This will then be reviewed by three teachers they
have invited to the film viewing along with their classmates.
