Word Formation- the process of forming new words from words or word group with the
same root
Process of Word Formation
1. Clipping - occurs when a word with more than one syllable is reduced to a
shorter form
Examples: gasoline (gas)
Advertisement (ad)
Laboratory (lab)
Telephone (phone)
Examination (exam)
Fanatic (fan)
Situation comedy (sitcom)
Example: I am an avid fan of Sarah Geronimo.
2. Blending - something “less” than a compound
Examples: smoke + fog = smog
Motor + hotel = motel
Breakfast + lunch = brunch
Medical + care = medicare
Spanish + English = Spanglish
Example: I prefer eating my brunch under the shady mango tree.
3. Acronyms – are new words formed from the initial letters of a set of other words
Examples: CD- Compact Disc
VCR- Video Cassette Recorder
RADAR- Radio Detection and Ranging
HIV- Human Immunodeficiency Virus
ATM- Automated Teller Machine
Example: My friend ran out of cash, so we decided to drop by at the nearest ATM
booth.
4. Compounding- consists of two or more free morphemes or words consisting of
free morphemes
Examples: blackbird bookcase bittersweet

Example: Father destroyed the doorknob because mother left the key inside.
5. Derivation- the most common word formation process, builds a new word by
adding morphemes
by prefixes: unusual, mislead, disrespect, imperfect
by suffixes: careless, childish, faithful, comfortable
prefix and suffix: disloyalty, unerringly, undeniably
Example: I do not tolerate dishonesty in this classroom.
