Background about 21 st century learning materials of your lesson
Basically, this project is a task that should be done in a group of 6 where all
of us are required to create an activity book for secondary school students by
choosing a topic from English textbook. We are required to do activities based
on 4 skills such as reading skills, writing skills, listening skills and speaking
skills based on the topic we chose. We had created all the activities on
different platforms such as Padlet, Kahoot, Quizizz, Youtube videos and also
Coggle. After creating those lesson materials we are required to create an
activity book for the students and a learning platform as a platform to post all
the materials we have prepared and create a creative activity book for the
students. Therefore, the learning platform that based on the social network
sites that we decided to use is Wix.com. The background details of the 21st
century learning platform for the activity book that we had created will be
explained in detail in this section to provide a better perspective on this
particular learning platform and also on the activity book as well.
First and foremost, for the listening skills activity we had recorded few
audios for the students. There are two audios were recorded with our own
voice. The students need to listen to those audios carefully in order to answer
all the listening skills activities given to them. For this listening skills activity we
had uploaded all the audios into the Google Drive and also link and attached it
with a QR code. The reason that we had linked the activities with a QR code is
because the students were able to access to the questions given to them
easily. We also had created few quizzes for this listening skills activity by using
the Quizizz platform. Students will be able to access all the questions online
easily. Also for the offline activity for this listening skills we had provided few
worksheets for the students where they need to listen to the audio and answer
the given worksheets
Next, for reading skills activity we had prepared few passages for the
students. There students are required to read the passages carefully in order
to answer all the reading skills activities given to them. For this reading skills
activity we had created all the activities by using Padlet and also Quizizz online
platforms. For the offline activity we had given a passage and also bolded
words for the the students to get to know the meaning. For the second offline
activity we gave a passage and the students need to read the passage
carefully and place it in a correct order. Then, for the online activity we
prepared question in Quizizz by giving a passage where the students need to
read the passage carefully and answer the true or false questions given. For
the second online activity, we given a passage in the padlet where the
students have to answer questions once the had read the passage.
Moreover, for the speaking skills, the students were required to perform a
role play, recording a conversation video, and also reading out the passage
given loudly. For this speaking skills activity we had created all the activities by
using Padlet and also Youtube videos online platforms. We also had created
offline and online activities for this speaking skills which is there will be two
activities for online based activity and another two activities for offline based
activity.
The last but not the least, for the writing skills, the students were required
to create a mind map in the Coggle website, sentence writing, and also
describing few pictures with the given words. For this writing skills activity we
had created all the activities by using Padlet and Coggle and also Quizizz
online platforms. We also had created offline and online activities for this
speaking skills which is there will be two activities for online based activity and
another two activities for offline based activity.
Objectives of the integration of technology in your lesson
The last but not the least, most of the technologies now days a very
user-friendly and more convenient to be used. Most importantly, teachers are
also able to create their own teaching materials based on their preferences
and learners needs since there are many online platforms for educational
purposes where the teacher can come up with creative and fun teaching
materials for their students. Since it is ease of use, teachers can just create
their activity that they had planned for their students and send the links of the
activities that they had created to students and they can easily access the task
given to them by just clicking on the link given. Not only that, most of the online
educational platforms can help to identify gaps in knowledge where when the
students have submitted their work the teacher were able to detect if there are
any gaps or areas they need to cover again in more depth since this platforms
shows the students performance once they had completed the given task.
The purpose of integrating 21 st century learning materials in the
classroom environment
Apart from that, 21st century learning materials can improve student’s
literacy and reading skills. Reading and writing can be a boring activity for
students during learning in class where the books only contain words, the
students need to rewrite the teaching materials on the whiteboard to make
them read it. The 21st century learning materials promote students to read
more because it provides eye catching picture or display in the news, articles,
books and other. Also all these 21st century learning materials provide more
interesting endless information for them to learn and refer to, this helps the
student to read more and also sharpen their reading and writing skills during
the process of it. This helps student to be motivated and give more effort to
read and learn the topics. Students can develop stronger reading habits in
their daily life and this can become one of their hobbies.
Last but not the least, could increase the students creativity and their
thinking skills as well. This is because 21st century materials are always very
creative and very eye catching, so this will encourage the students to involve in
the class activity more and concentrate on the lesson that the teacher is
teaching. By this way, they could generate more ideas and think out of the box
as they were paying full attention through out the lesson without getting
distracted. When they students started to think out of the box, this will definitely
improve their thinking skills as they were trying to generate and connect onto
what they had learnt. By integrating the 21st century learning materials in the
classroom we can definitely say that they students will stay focused, engaged
gained more knowledge and understand better on what they are learning
about.
Why the topic is chosen?
Firstly, the topic that we had chosen to create our exercise booklet is from
Form 1 English textbook, Unit 13: I am Malaysian. The reason we had choose
this topic because it is a fun and interesting topic to be learnt by the students
because as we all know there are three main race in Malaysia which is Malay,
Chinese and also Indian race. This is because in this particular topic the
students will be learning more on the foods, games and ethnic in Malaysia
based on the particular race and culture. The students will found out that this
topic is fun and interesting to be learnt because they are one of Malaysian
citizen and they will have the feel to discover and explore more in this topic.
For an example, they could get to know the traditional foods of each culture,
the traditional clothes in a particular culture and getting to know on how to
make those traditional dishes by their own. They also will find out that this tpic
is interesting as they had seen and tasted few of traditional food of a culture,
they also had seen or worn a traditional attire of their own culture or even the
traditional attire of the other cultures in Malaysia.
Besides that, this topic is also a brainstorming topic for the students. This is
because this topic is closely related to us as ,Malaysians. Also as Malaysians
all the students would be very familiar with this topic as they also experience
and go through all the aspects that were been discussed in this topic. For an
example they students had seen and tasted few traditional dishes in Malaysia,
they also had worn and seen the traditional attire of each race in Malaysia. By
this way we can say that the students could be able to brainstorm ideas and
think out of the box as they had experienced all this as a Malaysia. Also they
will be more engaged as all these things are just around them. So the students
will giving out their ideas more opinions more on it.
The first learning objective of the lesson plan which is for the listening skills
is the students should be able to list down at least 3 out of 4 recipe methods
according to the audio they have heard in 20 minutes. For this activity, the
teacher explains briefly on the listening skills activity and the audio that is
going to be played in this activity. Students have to scan the QR code given in
order to access to the audio that have been uploaded in Google Drive. Then,
the students are to listen to the audio for the first time and understand what the
audio is about. Next, the students are to listen to the audio for the second time.
After listening to the audio, students have to complete the worksheet by writing
down the recipe of the dish they have heard. Teacher then checks the answers
together with the students, if there is any mistakes in the students are to make
the changes by doing correction. This activity is given to improve students
listening skills and also enable the students to write down the information from
what they have heard.
The second learning objective of the lesson plan which is for the reading
skills is the students should be able to find at least 5 statements that is true
based on the passage they read within 10 minutes. For this activity, teacher
asks the students to open their exercise booklet and asks the students to read
the passage given in the book that is related to the topic. Teacher instructs the
students to read the passage twice. Then the students have to scan the QR
code given in the exercise booklet to do an activity related to the passage that
they had read. Teacher prepares a TRUE or FALSE activity through the
source of Quizizz. The students are required to answer each question in the
quiz within the time limit given. This activity is given to the students to improve
students understanding on the content they have read.
Moving on to the the next objective of the lesson plan which is writing skills
is he students should be able to write 2 out of 3 sentences with correct
spelling within 5 minutes. For this activity, the teacher gives a text about 3

main festivals in Malaysia. Then, teacher asks students to read the text given.
Later on, teacher instructs the students to create mind map in the Coggle
website. Next, teacher instructs the students to scan the QR code given in the
exercise booklet to submit the mind map that they have created in Padlet.
Teacher then discusses the answers for the both activity given with the
students. This activity is given to students to allow students to write down
information in their own words.
The last but not the least, the following objective of the lesson plan which
is speaking skills is the students should be able to participate in conversations
with certain speech acts such as greetings and word stress within 10 minutes.
For this activity, students are required to study the pictures and the options
step by step. Then, students are required to match the pictures according to
the right paisr, with the help visual cues and also the adverbs. A QR code to
Padlet is available for online students. After completing the first task, the
students are to work as a pair to have a conversation about interesting
Malaysian handicraft with proper use of greetings and proper pronunciation
involving word stress on syllables. Then, students are to record a video of the
conversation and submit in Padlet. Teacher will then evaluate the use of
greetings, grammar and pronunciation of the students based on the
conversation they had. This activity is given to students to practice new
language and also to encourage the students to speak confidently.

Explanation of the types of educational tools that you have implemented
in your lesson (projector/mobile phone/laptop/tablet and others) and the
integration with materials from social media that you have prepared.
Moving on, there are two types of different activities created for the
students which is online activity and also offline activity. The reason on why we
had created two type of activities is because few of the students might not be
having gadgets with them, does not have the access to WIFI/internet and also
might be having poor internet connection which enables them to do those
online activities given. In this case we had come up with offline activities for
those who are not able to access to the online activities so that those students
will not be left out in their studies.
On the other hand, we also created the activities for the implementation in
classroom environment as well where for the online activity the students will be
learning through the 21st century learning method which includes the
technology. As for an example, the students can learn through visual aids,
graphics, animation, audio and also video. This activity can be carried out with
the use of projector, laptop, and tablets as well. Meanwhile, for the offline
activity, the students will be learning in traditional way. As for an example the
students will be using books in order to do the activities given and write down
their answers on their books.

First and foremost, the main benefit of using the educational software when
creating learning materials is that it offers the students, a wide variety of
options for their learning process, solve their academic problems if they were
having any, connect with their classmates, and also having complete control of
their experience. The software that we had used to create our exercise booklet
is “Canva”.
To add on, the process involved in the production of the exercise booklet is
the editing of the whole exercise booklet. The editing process meant here was,
we attached few animations, pictures, created few activities in Microsoft Word
and we copy and paste it in our learning platform. Besides that we used few
interesting features in Canva such as GIF’s into our booklet and recorded few
audios and uploaded it on the learning platform as well. The process of
creating the activities for each skills were done on few educational platforms
such as Quizizz and Padlet where we created the questions in this platform
and we attached QR codes for the students to access to the questions directly.
VISUALS
What elements of multimedia that you have used/chosen in your lesson?
1. Text
We have combined various types of texts into our teaching aids in order to
make it more interesting and fun. We have added colour and make the font
much more learner centred. As this will be able to capture the student’s
attention and make the lesson less plain and boring. This is because, with
more fun fonts and colors added it will boost the student’s interest in the lesson
and it will be able to make the students attention span to increase. We also
included texts in all skills to make it easier for the students to be able to
understand the task.
2. Audio
We have included an audio based on our topic which is I am a Malaysian. The
audio is used for the listening stage where students are required to attentively
listen to the audio for about three times, then the students have to
unscrambled the words given and while scrambling the word the students
need to provide two ingredients in order to make the particular food. Few of the
audio that we have included was taken from YouTube and few was recorded
by our own. Then we manage to convert into MP3 to obtain its audio. The
audio is approximately about 2 minutes which will put the learners listening
skills to test as well.
3. GIF’s
There are GIF’s included in the in the activity booklet where we jad taken the
GIF’s from the Canva software. We included GIF’s because we found it
interesting to use this aid as it will grab the students attention when going
through the exercise booklet so that they will not only being looking at static
pictures.
4. Graphics
The use of graphics had been included in all the four skills activity. This is
where we had included pictures of several pictures related to the topic.
Moreover, we have included graphics on the website and exercise booklet
itself. The graphics are based on the topic we choose to give learners an
overview on the lesson that they are about to learn. We have chosen to do so
as we wanted the website and the exercise booklet to be more cheerful and
interactive rather than a plain and casual website.
5. Video
We had included few videos as our teaching materials. The viseo that we had
included is from the Youtube platform. The video that we included was related
to the lesson, so that the students have more clear picture and understand
more on the particular topic.
Conclusion
Since we were designing this exercise booklet and uploading it on the Wix
website for the students for their teaching and learning session the teacher
and the students could be able to communicate in this platform itself. Not only
that the students were able to communicate with the classmates as well and
share their ideas regarding the lessons. On top of that during this covid-19
pandemic all the students were unable to go to the school as the cases are
kept on increasing day by day so it is not safe for the students to go to the
school. in this case, the ministry of education have decided to have teaching
and learning conducted at home which is known as Pembelajaran dan
Pengajaran dari rumah (PDPR) via so this kind of activities should be designed
and carried out for the students.
Moreover, when the students are required to follow up the lesson at home
and the teachers are required to prepare their lesson via online, all this
definitely is not possible with the use of technologies. So this is why the
students and teacher need to exposed to the 21st century based learning at the
beginning so that they will be more use to it and would not feel difficult to cope
up the lessons via online and they will not be left out.
The last but not the least, as we were heading to modern era, we should be
equipped with modern technology based education so that the students could
adapt to the changes without being left out. in this project we had proven that it
is possible to create an online exercise booklet and we have applies most of
the multimedia elements in creating an online exercise booklet. We would like
to thank our lecturer for giving us this wonderful opportunity. As future teachers,
this kind of project will definitely prepare us to be more advanced in the future
when we were teaching the students at school as we had learn the basic skills
on how to conduct the classes using 21st century based teaching.
