Competency Standard 3:
To Support Social & emotional development & to Provide Positive Guidance
Functional Area 1 - Self
I want to achieve a great positive learning space that children can have the feeling they
can achieve anything they set their minds to. Having not only a set schedule break down of the
day we have rolls for the children to have during the day too. We can appoint at the start of the
day jobs, one to hold the clipboard in line, leader of the line, holder of the door, song picker of
the day, options and jobs can rotate with every child. When children have rolls they have a sense
of responsibility that builds their confidence and it can give them something to look forward to in
class. Building a positive and encouraging learning space is my goal. I want my students to feel
like they can feel safe and learn with others. I also want to make sure that I come to class with a
positive attitude and an open mind and heart for my students.
Functional Area 2 - Social
To promote social development I want to set an example myself, also allowing them to
role play and to be social with others in the classroom. One of the most fun observations I have
seen and had the chance to join in is seeing the role playing with puppets in the classroom. The
children take turns making the animal sound of the puppet they had in this case was a frog they
all would laugh as they would take turns. Sometimes turn taking with the children can cause
some conflict but I see the situation sometimes the conflicts of turn taken can be resolved
without me intervening, I know to always be there close by to help if needed. My goal here is to
make sure they build good habits when being in class with others.
Functional Area 3 - Guidance
With my guidance and support I hope that I can give students good examples of conflict
resolution and how to express their feelings and recognize their feelings properly. I know by
leading by example and supporting their feelings sets a good base in the classroom. One great
resource is books. I like books that show diversity and problems and feelings that my students
might encounter in their everyday life. Conflicts with students will happen and learning how to
manage them and move forward is very important. If it is a single student or between a couple of
students, both should have an action plan for the situation. Addressing the conflict and having an
appropriate time and space to address it is key. Having that time lets the students share their
feelings and try to see what the conflict is and try to find a solution if possible. Every conflict
may not be as easy as some might need more support and guidance from fellow educators.
