 Reading:
Talking with signs
 Sign language teacher, Daniel Cole, gives a short introduction to British
sign language:

I am a British sign language teacher. Sign language is the language that

uses the movement of the hands, body, face and head instead of spoken
words to communicate meaning to people who are deaf or having
hearing difficulties. Many people assume that sign language is the same
all over the world. This is not the case, however. Many different types
of sign language exist in the world and they have their own special
codes. British sign language is different from other English- speaking
sign languages.
To give you an idea of how sign language works, here are some of the
most popular words in British sign language. Remember that mouthing
the word is as important as the hand or body movement because lip
reading is part of sign language. Furthermore, some words share the
same sign. To make the sign for the word love, hold your hand across
your chest. To sign the word green, rub one arm against the other from
wrist to elbow. For colour red, brush your lip with your index finger.
For the word weather, hold both hands open with fingers separated and
Royal International Ecoles Royale
internationales
Language Schools
de Langue

fan your face twice. For the word cat, put both hands on your cheeks
and pull away from cheeks to indicate cat whiskers.
If you are interested in learning British sign language, there are various
schools in the UK. The cost is low and there are plenty of options, from
short online courses to university degrees for sign language
interpreters.

READ the text and then answer the questions:

3) What does the writer say about lip reading?

c- It is particularly important with British sign language.
