If your defenders want to be the next John Terry, or Nemanja Vidic, they will need to be able
to stop opposition attackers from taking shots at goal. This session will help teach the virtues
of blocking shots and tackling players.
What this session is about
1. Defending your goal.
2. Blocking shots from opposition attackers.
3. Tackling attackers and clearing any danger.
What to think about
Basic 1v1 defending technique.
Block tackle – Plant the non-tackling foot, use a side-foot pass-style technique to
tackle the ball and keep the knee and ankle locked.
Slide tackle – Use the leg furthest from the ball and “hook” it back towards where
attacker came from.
Poke tackle – Approach from side/behind and use the foot nearest the ball to “stab” it
with the toes.
Block shot – throw the body in the way.
Set-up
Use a penalty area, a goal and goalkeeper for the session and development.
If you have more players than in the top picture, set up more areas so the whole squad can
practise.
Use an area 30 yards long by 20 yards wide with one goal for the game.

What you get your players to do
Split your squad into two teams of four players. Each lines up on either side of penalty area
arc, about 20 yards from goal.
Play begins with an attacker dribbling the ball into the area while a defender runs to cover
him in a 1v1. The attacker tries to score while the defender attempts to prevent a goal by
making a tackle or block.
After the attack, the attacker becomes the defender against the next player in line. Defenders
joins the back of the other queue and the exercise is continuous.
One player takes the ball to attack while a defender runs to block or tackle to prevent a shot at
goal.
Development
Repeat the drill but use two attackers against two defenders. The attackers stay on the pitch
after the attack ends to become the new defenders while the attackers joins the other queue.
The exercise develops by using two defenders to stop two attackers combining to score a
goal.
Game situation
Play 4v4 with one goal and a goalkeeper. Set up more areas if you have to accommodate
more players. One team attacks and the other defends.
You stand at the end opposite the goal and serve a ball to the attackers each time it goes out
of play or a goal is scored. After five minutes, teams switch roles. The team which concedes
the fewest goals wins.
You serve the ball to the attackers in a 4v4 while the defenders attempt to block any shots on
goal.
What to call out
“Be patient but win the ball if you see an opportunity”
“Don’t go to ground unless you have to”
“Commit to the tackle”
“Get up quickly if you go to ground”
