FIRE IN ENGINE ROOM

AS SOON AS FIRE OBSERVED
1. Activate fire alarm & Quick stop
2. Deck Officer has been informed about a beginning of a fire through the manual fire
alarm, phone etc
3. activate quick shut valves if appropriate , Stop ventilation ,Close dumpers.

An investigation of the area involved & CREW MUSTER has been done
5. If no follows up from the investigation muster the fire team /rescue team / cooling team
to the buffer area
6. Evacuate unnecessary personnel and passengers from the buffer area and make sure
that all accesses are interdicted
7. Vessel position available in radio room, satellite terminal and other automatic distress
transmitters, updated as necessary
8. Inform the Designated Person ashore
9. At sea alter course and speed to reduce draft and minimise fire spread
10. If in or near port alert Port Authorities, shore fire service, fire brigades, make sure that
the International Shore Connection is properly fitted in place
11. If the fire breaks out sound “ FIRE ON BOARD GENERAL ALARM”
12. ENSURE ALL CREW MEMBERS ARE OUT OF THE
ENGINE ROOM
13. Close watertight doors , automatic and manual fire doors , skylight , portholes.
14. Shut down cargo and /or bunker operations if any
15. Isolate electrical circuits
20. RELEASE CO2 OR HALON INTO THE ENGINE ROOM
21 If necessary release second quantity of extinguishing agent .
22 At sea exhibit light / shapes
23 At sea prepare lifeboats (if possible)
24 Navigational warnings broadcaster on all distress frequencies
25 Distress message send if fire not under control on all distress frequencies

IF THE FIRE HAS BEEN PUT I T OUT
1. Thorough investigation of the area and THE ATMOSPHERE has been carried out
2. Has been ascertained that all source of ignition have been removed
3. Area has been properly ventilated and all residual fumes blown out
4. Electrical power mechanical ventilation has been restored
5. Assess damage to shore installation if in port
6.. Assess damage to own cargo (if any)
7.. Determine cause of fire
8. Assess damage to own vessel
9. If there is a spill of oil in connection with the fire, inform appropriate parties( refer to
SOPEP or VRP plan if within USA territorial waters
10. If available take photos of area damaged by the fire
11. Notify if spare parts required
12. Enter all times and facts in log book
13. Surveyor attendance/report
14. P & I attendance / report
