My name is Daniel Chukwudi Chukwunonso and I am a firm believer that I can achieve
whatever I set my mind to. Prior to being admitted to the University of Ibadan to study Geology
as an undergraduate, I was told that it was impossible for me to graduate with a first class in
geology, based on the difficulty of the course. My background had an extremely strong impact
on my development and interests, and consequently influenced my decision to finish with a good
degree. By the end of January, 2022, I will be graduating from the University of Ibadan with a
first class degree in geology. The journey has never been easy. Honestly, it was brutal at some
point. But despite the countless challenges I’ve faced, I decided to never give up.
At the end of my second year in the university, I decided to work due to financial hardship. I got
an internship opportunity at Solomay Geoservices where I worked as a field assistant. We carried
out numerous water drilling projects and geophysical surveys. It was fun and demanding,
especially after academic activities resumed, I had to work part time. I still work there today.
While I flourished in other geological courses academically, however, I found myself slowly
drawn to geophysics, unable to resist the combination of interesting classes and talented
professors. My field experience at Solomay Geoservices fueled my desire to pursue a graduate
degree in geophysics at Michigan Technological University. I also plan to finish my graduate
program here as the best student.
If granted this admission, I will be the first person in my family to travel outside Nigeria for
academic purpose. This is something I deeply desire, not for bragging rights, but to let my little
ones and those that look up to me know that anything and everything is possible if only they are
willing to dream it and work towards it.
