            EXPLANATION OF THE COAT OF ARMS
                     OF HIS EMINENCE
               JOSE F. CARDINAL ADVINCULA
                 ARCHBISHOP OF MANILA
    	         On the dexter side is the ecclesiastical arms of the Roman
    Catholic Archdiocese of Manila. In the upper field against the
    red background is depicted a tower in gold with a door and three
    windows in blue, and a silver crescent on dexter chief. The tower
    represents God Himself, who is called in Psalm 60:4 “turris fortis
    contra inimicum” (a tower of strength against the enemy). The three
    windows symbolize the Blessed Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy
    Spirit, three Persons in one God. The silver crescent placed in the
    upper right-hand corner of the shield represents the Immaculate
    Conception, patroness of the Manila Cathedral, the Archdiocese
    of Manila, and of the entire Philippines. The symbol of the moon
    comes from Revelation 12:1 - “A great sign appeared in the sky, a
    woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on
    her head a crown of twelve stars.”
    	         In the lower field against the blue background is a silver-
    colored sea lion holding in its right paw a cross fitchée. The sea lion
    historically called the Ultramar (in Latin ultra means from beyond
    and mar connotes the sea) was a distinctive emblem given by the
    King of Spain to the City of Manila as an overseas colony. The
    cross fitchée held by the sea lion is a cross whose base is pointed.
    Crosses of this description are said to have been carried by the early
    Christians on their pilgrimages so that they might readily be fixed
    in the ground while performing their devotions.

	         This signifies the missionary call of the Filipino people to
plant the faith, not only in Asia, but throughout the world. By this,
the Filipino faithful proclaim that they cannot “glory except in the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal. 6:14).
	          At the sinister side is the personal arms of the Cardinal
pertaining to his life and ministry. At the sinister chief of the
shield is the lily and the carpenter’s square. The carpenter’s square
symbolizes St. Joseph, the namesake of the Cardinal and his personal
patron saint. The Cardinal wishes to emulate in St. Joseph the vigor
of being a worker docile to God’s providence and as a just man in
the Lord’s vineyard. The lily over the blue background represents
the filial devotion of the Cardinal to the Virgin Mary, especially in
her title as Queen of the Most Holy Rosary.
	         At the sinister flank is a chain of nine links. This represents
the Cardinal’s surname, Advincula, which is derived from the Latin
phrase “ad vincula” or “fettered with chains”. The gold background
represents virtue, which is the might of the Christian that brings
glory to God. The chain, a symbol of imprisonment and slavery, is
brought to a renewed meaning in light of the gold background: from
servitude to servanthood (cf. Romans 6:22). It is the change from
the weakness of a hopeless slave to the strength of a disciple, whose
hope is the glory of the Lord. This symbol reminds the Cardinal
of the links that fasten him to the fullness of Christ’s priesthood,
thereby becoming himself a chain between God and the flock
entrusted to him.
                                                                            5
    	         At the sinister base of the shield is a mountain, on
    top of it is a horse, a crescent moon, and a five pointed star. The
    mountain depicts Mt. Panginraon in the town of Dumalag, Capiz,
    the Cardinal’s birthplace and hometown that is seen as an array
    of greenery that shows some strips of limestone formation. The
    horse refers to St. Martin of Tours, Patron Saint of Soldiers, the
    patron saint of the parish and town of Dumalag. The crescent moon
    symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception,
    the titular patroness of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Capiz
    where the Cardinal comes from, and the St. Pius X Seminary in
    Roxas City, Capiz where the Cardinal finished his minor seminary
    formation and philosophical studies. The five-pointed star is a pre-
    eminent symbol for the virtue of faith and of De La Salle University-
    Manila where the Cardinal finished his Master of Arts in Guidance
    and Counseling. The viewpoint of psychology has made a strong
    influence in the manner and pastoral style of the Cardinal.
    	        The Archbishop’s Cross is styled as a Dominican cross
    used by the Order of Preachers. He was educated early on by the
    Dominican Sisters at St. Martin Academy, Dumalag, Capiz. He also
    finished his theological studies at the University of Santo Tomas
    Central Seminary. He later on earned his Licentiate in Canon Law
    at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in
    Rome, Italy.

	        The motto of the Cardinal, AUDIAM (I WILL LISTEN),
is taken from 1 Samuel 3:10, where we see the Lord calling Samuel
three times. On the third call, at the instruction of Eli, Samuel finally
responded “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” He believes that
only in prayerful listening to God’s inspiration and guidance can he
bring the good news of salvation to the people. By starting with a
listening heart, the Cardinal can truly shepherd his flock.

          CURRICULUM VITAE OF HIS EMINENCE
             JOSE F. CARDINAL ADVINCULA
               ARCHBISHOP OF MANILA
    	        Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula was born on March 30,
    1952 in Dumalag, Capiz to Jose Firmalino Advincula and Carmen
    Falsis Fuerte. He is the fourth of the twelve children – six boys
    and six girls. He has two other brothers who are priests – Msgr.
    Benjamin and Fr. Neil Peter. After graduating from Dumalag
    Elementary School in 1964, he entered St. Pius X Seminary in Roxas
    City, Capiz, where he finished secondary education in 1968 and
    philosophy in 1972. He went on to the University of Santo Tomas
    Central Seminary in Manila for theologate where he obtained his
    Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1975.
    	         He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Capiz on
    April 4, 1976. Immediately thereafter he was assigned as spiritual
    director, principal, and registrar at St. Pius X Seminary. He took up
    Guidance and Counselling in De La Salle University-Manila. Later
    on he studied at the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome
    (Angelicum) where he earned his Licentiate in Canon Law.
    	        He became formator and Dean of Studies at the Immaculate
    Conception School of Theology in Vican, Ilocos Sur (1990 – 1993).
    Then he was transferred to St. Joseph Regional Seminary in Jaro,
    Iloilo where he was a professor and spiritual director (1993 – 1995).
    In May 1995 he was appointed Rector of St. Pius X Seminary in
    Roxas City, Capiz, (1995-1999) and Judicial Vicar.

	         When Sancta Maria Mater et Regina Seminarium, the
major seminary of Capiz, was opened in July 1999, he became its
first Rector until he was assigned on February 1, 2000 as parish
priest of Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish in Dao, Capiz.
	        In June 1997 Pope St. John Paul II conferred on him the title
of Papal Chaplain. On July 25, 2001 he was appointed as Bishop of
San Carlos in Negros, ordained on September 8, 2001 and installed
on September 11, 2001. On November 9, 2011 Pope Benedict XVI
transferred him to the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Capiz which
he canonically took possession of on January 11, 2012. In October
25, 2020 His Holiness Pope Francis announced him as among those
to be created cardinals in the Consistory of November 28, 2020. He
was designated as the 33rd Archbishop of Manila on March 25, 2021
and took canonical possession of it on June 24, 2021.
	        As a member of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the
Philippines he was chairman of the Commission on Indigenous
Peoples, and of the Office on Women, a member of the Commissions
on the Doctrine of the Faith, on Social Action, Justice and Peace,
and of the Committee on International Eucharistic Congress.

                    A LITURGICAL CATECHESIS
     THE RITE OF LITURGICAL RECEPTION
     The reformed rite of reception of a newly appointed bishop to a
     diocese is a simple rite, which intends to catechize the people of
     God about the role and function of the bishop in the Christian
     community. The celebration tries to capture in ritual form the
     nature of the Church and the relationship of the bishop to the
     Church; even more nobly, it points to the ritual action that reveals in
     concrete form (liturgically, artistically, professionally) the presence
     of God. The whole ritual form of reception of the new bishop
     focuses attention on the place of the bishop in the ritual life of the
     Church. Assuredly, there is no Church without the bishop, and the
     bishop’s liturgy is the choice manifestation of the Church; but the
     bishop is not the whole church nor is the bishop’s liturgy the only
     indication of the salvific presence of God. The bishop is above all
     the shepherd of the diocese that is entrusted to him. The bishop is
     also the successor to the Apostles, head of the local Church, and the
     representative of Christ.His functions and duties, and in fact who
     he is, are always defined in relationship to Christ the head of the
     Church, the good Shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep.
     The rites that inaugurate the ministerial life of the new bishop
     in this sense highlights the contours of the road that he has to
     undertake in the local Church entrusted to his care. The place where
     the celebration takes place is in “the see” of the diocese, the mother
     church of the whole diocese, the cathedral church. It is here that the
     bishop presides in the liturgy, the chief task entrusted to him for
     the glorification of God and the sanctification of humankind.

He is constituted “the liturgist” of the diocese for in him the faithful
in the diocese will be gathered to do the “memory” of the Lord and
to “serve” in his presence as he presides in the liturgical celebrations
in the many coming years.
It is in the cathedral church that the bishop gives fuller expression
to his episcopal ministry as he leads his flock, together with his
presbyters, in the praise of God. The cathedral church is not only
the home of the diocese, it is the picture of the diocese, always
ready for God’s presence in the midst of man’s concern for the
what is ephemeral. “The cathedral Church is “a sign… of the unity
of believers in the faith that the bishop proclaims as a shepherd of
the Lord’s flock.” The preeminent manifestation of the local Church
is present when the bishop, as high priest of his flock, celebrates
the Eucharist and particularly when he celebrates in the cathedral,
surrounded by his college of presbyters and by his ministers, and
with the full, active participation of all of God’s holy people.
The rite of reception happens at the door of the cathedral. The
rector of the cathedral offers the newly appointed bishop a crucifix
to be kissed, then a sprinkler of holy water, with which the bishop
sprinkles himself and those present. The bishop may be escorted
to the Blessed Sacrament chapel, where he kneels for a moment in
adoration, then to the vesting room.
The symbols in this rite of reception are very direct. They are
preparatory rites for the celebration of the Eucharist, which is the
heart of the whole celebration. The bishop kisses the crucifix as a
reminder of his relationship with Christ, who suffered and died for
his flock.

     The bishop is demanded by the very nature of his office as the
     shepherd of the flock to witness to this self-giving love of the Good
     Shepherd: “No greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for his
     friends.”
     Then the sprinkling of the holy water on himself and to the people
     present recalls the baptismal character from which all of us have
     been made children of God. This gesture manifests the fundamental
     bond that the head of the church, the bishop, and the faithful share
     in the faith: baptism. St Augustine clearly expresses this: “for you
     I am a bishop, with you I am a Christian.” Then through the silent
     adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the bishop becomes a living
     witness to the power of prayer.The whole presbyterium who prays
     together with the bishop attests to this truth. This is a sign of their
     identity as “men of prayer.”
     THE RITE OF CANONICAL INSTALLATION
     The celebration of the Eucharist then begins. Here the main
     rite of “taking possession of the diocese” takes place. The whole
     celebration is centered on the Eucharistic celebration for in this
     “the bishop is the point of unity for the Church of the diocese; when
     he presides at the liturgical function, the local church achieves its
     maximum unity and community.”
     After reverencing the altar, the bishop goes to his chair. The
     installing prelate begins the celebration of the Eucharist and greets
     the people of God gathered for this celebration. After the greeting,
     he asks that the Apostolic Letter be shown and read.

This is an ancient tradition of the church that expresses the bond
of unity of the local church to the universal church, headed by the
Bishop of Rome, the Pope. In fact, this is the essence of the rite
of canonical installation of the newly appointed bishop in taking
possession of his diocese.
Then the faithful express their acceptance and gratitude for the
appointment of the bishop as the choir sings “Thanks be to God.”
After the Apostolic letter is read, the new bishop is led to his
cathedra or his “chair.” With the reform of the liturgy in Vatican II,
the cathedra of the bishop has come to signify his seat of leadership,
no longer a throne. The cathedra is a sign of his teaching office and
pastoral power in the particular Church. “The cathedra should be a
chair that stands alone and is permanently installed. Its placement
should make it clear that the bishop is presiding over the whole
community of the faithful.”
“The bishop is then greeted by members of the diocesan clergy,
religious men and women, members of the faithful, and as
circumstances suggest, representatives of the civil authority.”
This signifies the respect and obedience the people of God ought
to render the chief shepherd of the archdiocese. As the Council
teaches: “the faithful should cling to the bishop as the Church clings
to Jesus Christ and as Jesus Christ clings to the Father…”
The celebration of the Eucharist continues in the usual manner,
presided over by the new bishop. The culmination of the celebration
is his presidency over the Eucharistic celebration for “the office of
bishop as teacher, sanctifier, and pastor of his church shines forth
most clearly in a liturgy that he celebrates with his people.”

Fr. Kali Pietre Llamado, Vice Rector of the cathedral, presents a crucifix
for Cardinal Advincula to kiss. A deacon gives him the sprinkler with
holy water. The new archbishop sprinkles himself and those gathered
around him. He spends a few moments of silent prayer using a kneeler
prepared for him.
He proceeds to the St. Joseph Chapel to vest for Mass. He then offers a
prayer and flowers to St. Joseph.

     READING OF THE APOSTOLIC LETTER
     The Chancellor, Fr. Reginald Malicdem, shows the Apostolic Letter to
     the College of Consultors. Then, while everyone is standing, he reads
     the Apostolic Letter at the lectern. To cue the people’s response, the
     reading of the Apostolic Letter is concluded with Let us therefore bless the
     Lord. The people respond with the acclamation Thanks be to God, or with
     some other suitable acclamation.

     Cardinal Advincula, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the
     bread and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands,
     saying in a low voice:

              it will become for us the bread of life.
     Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal.

     Cardinal Advincula genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly
     raised above the paten or above the chalice, while facing the people,
     says aloud:

              Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
     And together with the people he adds once:
              Lord, I am not worthy
              that you should enter under my roof,

     communicants. Cardinal Advincula raises a host slightly and shows it

Then Cardinal Advincula may return to the chair. If appropriate, a
sacred silence may be observed for a while, or a psalm or other canticle

     Then, standing at the chair and facing the people, with hands joined,
     Cardinal Advincula says:

     All pray in silence with Cardinal Advincula for a while, unless silence

     After the post-communion prayer, the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop
     Brown, delivers his message.
